#690 - Paying to Cut, Paying Not to Cut

Why is paying people to cut down trees like paying them not to cut down trees? Well, do these two apparent opposites actually result in opposite outcomes...? Or do they both, by equating trees with money, turn them into resources, and so effectively put them under the control of rich foreigners, with predictable consequences. In our first hour, Jeff Conant explores "REDD", the World Bank's forest protection racket for the global south. In our second hour, Max Haiven looks at the extreme and ongoing financialization of the "developed" world, resulting in a damage to society and personal identities that while difficult to quantify is nevertheless all too real. He recommends we "rededicate ourselves to moving beyond individualism and this idea that we are all competitive agents by actively building grassroots concrete effort to reclaim the commons by actively building grassroots efforts in the here and now.

Syrian solution must involve all parties

Zafar Bangash discusses the hypocrisy of US policy in Iraq and Syria. He also probes the nature of the Saudi-funded opposition in Syria, who in their extensive brutality and war crimes, violate Islamic law. Turkey's attempt to create a no-fly-zone over Syria is also mentioned.
In the May election, Syrian refugees jammed the highways to vote for President Assad, whom they see as the only hope against the terrorist invasion. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is losing influence as Iraq moves closer to Iran.
Phil Taylor and Zafar Bangash emphasize that the US did not supply Iraq with military airplanes because the US did not want Iraq to be able to defend itself. If Iraq had an effective air force, they would have been able to stop ISIS from occupying parts of Iraq.
They also noted the irony of Israel helping ISIS with military and medical support. Israel prefers ISIS rather than Syrian control of the Golan Heights.
Remembering Milton "The Voice" Blake

Norman Otis Richmond discusses his recent article, "Remembering the Late Milton Blake on the 70th Anniversary of His Birth." Richmond and Blake were comrades in revolutionary spirit, music and radio broadcasting. They created the Black Music Association (BMA) Toronto Chapter in 1984, which supported the cultural boycott of South Africa.
Richmond recounts how Blake, a Pan-Africanist, helped persuade the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Science (CARAS) to add Black Music Awards categories into the 1985 Juno Awards. Rhythm & Blues and reggae were added but there was a continued fight to have Calyposo added as a separate category. Milton Blake became a popular radio host.
Richmond also commented on the mega-movie "Equalizer," and condemned it as Russophobic (the evil crime lord was even named "Vladimir Pushkin").

Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Kate MacLeod, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. Israel's Policy of Incremental Genocide of Palestinians

On today's show we feature an interview with Israeli historian Ilan Pappé on the historical context of the Israeli Palestinian conflict, and Israel's policy of "incremental genocide" against the Palestinian people.
The interview is courtesy of KPFA's talk show "Voices of the Middle East and North Africa", and was conducted on July 15 (PRIOR to the Israeli military land invasion phase of its Gaza slaughter campaign).
Pappé cites an Israeli film, "The Lab," by Yutan Feldman, as useful in understanding Israel's wanton use of weapons against Gaza. Its government is using Gaza as a testing ground for its newest weapons and control techniques.
Unhappily, KPFA goofed and superimposed an incorrectly timed robotic outro right on top of Pappé's words for 35 seconds starting at 28:43 (10 minutes before the end). This defies any attempt to clean up. Try VERY HARD and you MAY be able to make out Pappé's words during that period!
If you're looking for the August 3 edition: there wasn't one. Unhappily, the station was off the air that morning.

We also mention two remarkable revelations:
(1) Taunted by Zionist zealots to "read the Bible" (to "prove" that God granted the land of Israel for all time to Jews), skeptic Naomi Klein did just that. In fact, the three books of the Bible that bear on that issue say something entirely different, and Biblical scholars agree. They say God grants this land (and more) to ANYONE, for good behavior.
(2) Israeli police officials have acknowledged that they knew almost right away that Hamas was NOT culpable for the three teenagers' murder. Along with Netanyahu, they hid this information in order to accommodate Israel's false pretext for its vicious attack on Gaza.
