Solidarité Québec-Gaza

Une conférence de presse a eu lieu le vendredi 8 août afin de réclamer une plus grande solidarité entre le Québec et Gaza. Plusieurs organisations Québécoises ont invité le public Québécois à venir en masse pour démontrer leur soutien au peuple Palestinien durant une grande manifestation qui s’est déroulé le dimanche 10 août et qui a commencé à la Place Émilie-Gamelin près de la station Berri UQAM. Depuis qu’Israel a commencé son offensive contre Gaza le 8 juillet, presque 2,000 Palestiniens sont morts, 80% de ceux-ci sont des civils, parmi eux 500 enfants. Le gouvernement Canadien refuse toujours de condamner les massacres à Gaza et donne son appui total et inconditionnel à l’État d’Israel, qui continue à violer plusieurs lois internationales. Depuis le début de l’offensive contre Gaza, les Montréalais et Montréalaises ont participé à plus de 10 démonstrations en solidarité avec le peuple Palestinien. Les conférenciers ont expliqué aux médias pourquoi c’est important que le Québec démontre sa solidarité avec Gaza. Under the Olive était présent à la conférence de presse et a enregistré les discours des conférenciers.

For the motion: Melissa Farley is a clinical and research psychologist for Prostitution Research & Education. She has published 22 peer-reviewed articles on prostitution and trafficking. An abolitionist, Farley advocates for alternatives to the institution of prostitution. She manages the Prostitution Research & Education website (prostitutionresearch.com) and cofounded the Nevada Coalition Against Sex Trafficking. For the motion: Catharine MacKinnon is a specialist in Sex Equality Issues specializes in sex equality issues under international and constitutional law. She pioneered the legal claim for sexual harassment and, with Andrea Dworkin and created ordinances recognizing pornography as a civil rights violation. The Supreme Court of Canada largely accepted her approaches to equality, pornography, and hate speech. She is one of the most widely-cited legal scholars in English. For the motion: Wendy Shalit is the author of "A Return to Modesty: Discovering The Lost Virtue". She argues that modesty is misunderstood as repression. Her essays on literary and cultural topics have appeared in Commentary, Slate, the Wall Street Journal and other publications. Against the motion: Sydney Barrows, who is a former Mayflower Madam perhaps better known to millions as the "Mayflower Madam". Her book, Mayflower Madam, went right to the top of the New York Times bestseller list. Against the motion: Tyler Cowen is a Professor of Economics at George Mason University and director of the Mercatus Center. Ali Abunimah & "The Struggle for Justice in Palestine"

Ali Abunimah, co-founder of the The Electronic Intifada - electronicintifada.net- reads from his recent book, "The Struggle for Justice in Palestine" at the Evanston Public Library (EPL). The author/reading, jointly sponsored by a local peace group had been cancelled just days prior to its scheduled date, when the library director, Karen Danzig Lyons, decided that the program should not proceed without the "balance' of a pro-Israel speaker at the event. An announcement by the author - http://electronicintifada.net/blogs/ali-abunimah/evanston-public-library-bans-my-book-talk-palestine - and organizing by the local peace and activist community in protest resulted in a fire-storm of criticism that took on national dimensions. The Director reversed her decision to cancel and the event went ahead as planed to a capacity audience. Abunimah's opening comments refer to the controversy and the announced intention of the Evanston Public Library to go forward with additional adult programing that would provide an opportunity for library patrons to hear someone speaking about Palestine and resistance to the occupation from a Palestinian perspective.

Injustice in Africa: The ICC pursues only Africans

Obama hosts the first US Africa Leaders Summit. African leaders want out of the money-manipulated (two-thirds of money from EU), politically-controlled (vote trading/profit making) and mediocre ICC (many of the ‘judges’ have never been judges and some have never even been lawyers). The ICC is an "European legal adventurism" game that Africans want to stop playing. Should the Palestinians go to the ICC? Jonathan Trent and the OMEGA Project

When life gives you lemons they say to make lemonade. And what if life gives you sewage released into an enclosed bay, what can you make? Certainly not lemonade, right? Our guest today on Sea Change Radio is NASA scientist and UC Santa Cruz professor, Jonathan Trent. He has figured out how to use algae to turn wastewater pollution into biofuel. This ambitious project, called Offshore Membrane Enclosures for Growing Algae (or OMEGA) not only places algae where it can consume waste and excrete oils for fuel, it also creates spaces for low-impact aquaculture, captures CO2, and cleans pollutants out of bays. The technology also converts wastewater to drinking water, which, with a little lemon and sugar could even be used to make, you guessed it, lemonade. Listen now as host Alex Wise talks with Dr. Trent, an inventor, pioneer, and visionary whose OMEGA project offers hope for fuel, food, water, and a cleaner world.
