Fast Food Workers Protests from Ferguson to NYC

Hundreds Arrested as Fast Food Workers Strike for Living Wage and Unionization featuring Jeanina Jenkins - a McDonalds Worker in Ferguson, Mo. who joined the NYC protests and was active in protesting the police killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO Thousands of fast food workers across 150 U.S. cities walked off the job recently and nearly 500 of them willfully committed civil disobedience as part of their protest and were arrested. In NYC 34 fast food workers were arrested. Protesting fast food workers have insisted that they were willing to do whatever it takes in order to earn union recognition and a higher wage. The NYC fast-food workers were also joined by over 20 St. Louis area fast-food workers, , including many from Ferguson, who were among the first in the country to join the Fight for $15, and have been on strike as many as six times. Jeanina Jenkins, a McDonald s employee in Ferguson, said I m willing to do whatever it takes because I m barely surviving on the $7.97/hr. I make at McDonald s. After everything that s happened here in my community during the last month, I know that if I don t stand up and fight for what I believe in, for what s right, that nobody else will and nothing will ever change.

Missing and Murdered Women and Youth Camp

The discovery Tina Fontain's remains in the Red River has once again galvanized the public to address the injustice of Canada's missing and murdered women. Some are demanding a National Inquiry, others are championing efforts to dredge the Red River. Wednesday, Sept. 10, CKUW News Director Michael Welch interviewed two ladies personally engaged in activism around this issue. Sue Caribou, the Aunt of missing woman Tanya Nepinak, and activist Kona Cochran. Michael also played audio from the Youth Camp at Memorial Park, which was set up to demand a National Inquiry.

Michael Klare on Climate Change and Warmaking

Distinguished Professor, author, and activist Michael Klare spoke at MIT on 9-11-2014 on the subject of climate change and wars. We are now seeing that these two issues are intimately connected. Professor Klare spells this out. Klare is Five College Professor of Peace and World Security Studies, based at Hampshire College. His most recent book is The Race for What’s Left: The Global Scramble for the World’s Last Resources. He teaches courses on resource politics, contemporary conflict, and world affairs. Klare has written fourteen books and hundreds of essays on these and related topics; a strong believer in the need for public debate and discussion, he also appears regularly in the media and in public to express his views on critical issues. [Much of this description is copied from his website, michaelklare.com.] The event was organized in view of the upcoming worldwide rally 9-21-2014 to stop global warming AND stop the wars. The USA's rally is scheduled in New York City. In "preliminary" sections posted here, you'll hear a variety of announcements for people considering attending. After painfully noting MIT's complicity in America's war crimes, and its embrace of Koch family money, Klare presents three basic propositions. Summarized, they are: (1) The climate crisis makes all kinds of conflict more likely; (2) Increased conflict makes a climate solution much more difficult; and (3) The only hope of solution involves promotion of international cooperation in a program of carbon reduction and equitable resource distribution. Klare emphasizes that solution of the climate crisis is NOT a technical problem. He lists actions that are technically available now. The problem is a lack of political will by those who control the world. The recording is split up into six pieces, so broadcasters can fit air schedules as required. The pieces are semi-independent. The last piece is the Q&A and Discussion session, which was quite extensive and wide-ranging.

9/11 Meets ISIL: Can the Truth Set US FREE?
