Migrant solidarity and squatting in Calais, France

Calais is a port city in France that sits as the major nexus of migrants attempting to leave the French (and thus European) mainland to reach the U.K. in seek of asylum. These migrants are fleeing the effects of imperialism (sometimes war, always capital) in their home countries. They hail from Pakistan, Egypt, Syria, Afghanistan, Chad, Nigeria, Sudan and many other places and seek peace and stability in the EU. The irony is that the EU, like the U.S., is a major exporter of the troubles the migrants seek to escape. In many ways, the "immigration crisis" in the U.S. mirrors the reality of the "immigration crisis" in the EU. This week's episode of the Final Straw features a conversation with Greta, a No Border Activist living in the UK about struggles of immigrants in Calais, where over the last 2 months there have been raids that have netted hundreds of migrants seeking to leave the mainland and land in the UK with expectation of receiving a refugee status. Greta tells us about the immigration structure of the EU's Shengen Zone (of which the UK is not a part), about the recent raids and squat evictions in Calais, and the new squat "Impasse de Saline" outside of the city. The Diving Bell and The Butterfly

We re going deep this week as we Queue up the (2007) French Film THE DIVING BELL & THE BUTTERFLY, the astonishing true-life story of Jean-Dominic Bauby, a man who held the world in his palm, lost everything to sudden paralysis at the age of 43, and somehow found the strength to rebound. This story was first received in Bauby s best-selling autobiography The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, then in Jean-Jacques Beineix s half-hour 1997 documentary of the same title, ten years after that Julian Schnable helms the camera in this full length motion picture. The movie follows Bauby s story, his instantaneous descent from a wealthy and congenial playboy and the editor of French Elle, to a bed-bound, hospitalized stroke victim with an inactive brain stem that made it impossible for him to speak or move a muscle of his body. This prison, as it were, became a kind of diving bell for Bauby- one with no means of escape. With the editor s mind unaffected, his only solace lay in the butterfly of his seemingly depthless fantasies and memories. Because of Bauby s physical restriction, he only possessed one channel for communication with the outside world, his single unaffected eye. By blinking, he not only began to interact again with the world around him, but incredibly, authored the said memoir via a code used to signify specific letters of the alphabet, Mathieu Amalric tackles the difficult role of Bauby in this film about the final last stand of the human spirit.

The Death of Eric Garner

One week has passed since the tragic and controversial death of 43-year old Eric Garner, a native of Staten Island, N.Y., and father of six. In an incident captured on camera, Mr. Garner died after resisting arrest from NYPD officers for the apparent charge of selling untaxed cigarettes. Footage shows the man being put in a suspected illegal chokehold by officer Daniel Pantaleo, before audibly protesting of his inability to breathe and then collapsing outside a beauty salon. He was later pronounced dead at the Richmond University Medical Center following cardiac arrest. For this edition of Smells Like Human Spirit, Guy Evans welcomes native New Yorker Jason Melendez to the show to discuss both the case and the wider issue of perceived police brutality in New York City.

The Pitfalls of Peacekeeping

Phil interviews Peter Robinson, an American International Criminal Lawyer who has argued cases at the Hague, the ICTY and ICTR. Robinson defended the peace-seeking Joseph Nzirorera, former President of the Rwanda National Assembly, at the ICTR.
