Tonight, seekers, comes the first fruits from the FUNHOUSE Radio Outreach Project (my F.R.O.P. agenda), and I am damned proud! Reverend Louie Louie's show project has jelled into fearsome excellence. But this more than just a wonderfully goofy and evocative radio exercise produced by the hands of an editing master--this is the long-awaited culmination of an interrupted dream from thirty frickin' years ago! As I describe it in the intro, RL² has an impressive radio pedigree, and in the day, he produced some amazing stuff, particularly the NORBLE DURNQUEST ALL-AMERICAN LIZARD SHOW (!!!). He wasn't just a star...he was a hero. And tonight, after decades spent in limbo, Norble's sprawling narrative at last has been given the courtesy of a radio reacharound. The loose ends that seemed destined to dangle in the breeze forever have been macraméed into a wondrous sonic excursion into the mind of this marvelous madman. This week William speaks with V, who is an anarchist living in Bloomington IN about current and former instances of racist and institutional violence against inmates at the Pendleton Correctional Institution in Madison County, Indiana. He also has long been a radical political thinker and comedian who admired Jack Paar and whose mentor was Redd Fox (we're dating ourselves, but young people: please listen!). John became interested in the Kennedy assassination after he read a book by attorney Jim Garrison and then John interviewed him for 3 1/2 hours in what came to be, The Garrison Tapes. The Conversation

Hey, are you following me? No worries, Just setting the tone as we Queue up this weeks selection, the (1974) Paranoid Thriller THE CONVERSATION from director Francis Ford Coppola staring Gene Hackman. Made between The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, The Conversation was a return to small-scale art films for Coppola. Regarded as an artistic highpoint of the time, it tells the tale of sound surveillance expert Harry Caul (Gene Hackman), who s hired to track a young couple, taping their conversation as they walk through San Francisco s crowded Union Square. Knowing full well how technology can invade privacy, Harry obsessively keeps to himself, separating business from his personal life, even refusing to discuss what he does or where he lives with his girlfriend, Amy. Harry s work starts to trouble him, however, as he comes to believe that the conversation he pieced together reveals a plot by the mysterious corporate Director who hired him to murder the couple. After he allows himself to be seduced by a call girl, who then steals the tapes, Harry is all the more convinced that a killing will occur, and he can no longer separate his job from his conscience. The Godfather Part II and The Conversation earned Coppola a rare pair of Oscar nominations for Best Picture, as well as two nominations for Best Screenplay (The Godfather Part II won both). Praised by critics, The Conversation was not a popular hit, but it has since come to be praised as a film of note, both for it s supburb depictions and methodical tones " not to mention a VERY YOUNG Harrison Ford! Stanley Aronowitz - Toward a New Workers Movement

The Death and Life of American Labor: Toward a New Workers Movement with Stanley Aronowitz - In the 1950s, Aronowitz was a factory metalworker. In the 50s and 60s, he directed organizing with the Amalgamated Clothing Workers and the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers. In 1963, he coordinated labor participation for the March on Washington for Jobs & Freedom. Ten years later, the publication of his book False Promises: The Shaping of American Working Class Consciousness was a landmark in the study of the U.S. working-class and workers movements. Union membership in the United States has fallen below 11 percent, the lowest rate since before the New Deal. Labor activist and scholar of the American labor movement Stanley Aronowitz argues that the movement as we have known it for the last 100 years is effectively dead. And he explains how this death has been a long time coming "the organizing and political principles adopted by U.S. unions at mid-century have taken a terrible toll. Aronowitz draws on his long personal experience and he reflects on his continuing involvement in labor organizing, with groups such as the Professional Staff Congress of the City University of NY. He brings a historians understanding of American workers struggles in taking the long view of the labor movement. Then, in a survey of current initiatives,strikes, organizations, and allies, he analyzes possibilities of labors rebirth, and sets out a program for a new, broad, radical workers movement.
