Co-host Stuart Richardson speaks to Ana Collins, Indigenous Coordinator for the Peoples Social Forum about the purpose and critical role a social forum can have in social change.
The Peoplesâ Social Forum, to be held in Ottawa, August 21-24, 2014, is about relationship building, bringing people together who donât usually work together but who might be working on common causes, changing the nature of future relationships, honouring treaties, changing the structure of how things are done on this land, and respecting the teachings that the land has for us.
This historic 4-day gathering will open with traditional Algonquin ceremony on Victoria Island. At the University of Ottawa, and other sites in the city, at hundreds of workshops, presentations, panels, movement assemblies, demonstrations and arts and cultural events we will all teach and we will all learn. We will see the interconnectedness of all our struggles and we will build a better future together in good relationships.

How Quebec bookstores survived

Montreal-based publisher Robin Philpot (Baraka Books) explains that Quebec has survived the bookstore demise due to its regulation (certified publishers, bookstores, distributors) and 100 percent Quebec ownership. Half of Canadian books are sold in Quebec which has only 23 percent of the Canadian population. Regulating the market, which guarantees sales to institutions, and legislating fixed prices are necessary for the survival of bookstores. They also discuss the cultural value of books, as in the example of Mick Lowe's, "The Raids."

She is author of "In Search of Fatima: A Palestinian Story" and "Married to Another Man: Israel's Dilemma in Palestine."
At an event where all participants are already in agreement that One Democratic State is the only hope for ending the Israeli occupation and achieving meaningful justice for Palestinians, Dr Ghada Karmi spoke. She addressed the myriad challenges that must be overcome.
Among them: there are many who still believe the two-state "solution," an Israeli dodge, is somehow feasible or right. All these people must all be won over. And that is only the beginning.

This week's episode features a short interview with a member of the No-TAV struggle in the Italian Alps. For decades the residents of Val di Susa in northern Italy (near Turin) have been struggling to stop the development of a 30 mile long tunnel through the mountains, across the border to Lyon, France. The project is a European Union one that is one wing of a larger international commercial venture web of restricted transit for goods that EU is attempting to push through. The actual tunneling threatens, among other things, to release enough uranium and asbestos into the air and shallow water-table of Val di Susa and surrounding areas that even the EU estimates that the damage will be measurable and irreparable.
We speak about what shapes the resistance has taken, how anarchists and others have engaged at varying times, and the repression faced from the government. Currently, there are arrests and incarcerations and investigations concerning, among other activities, a night-time raid in 2012 of the militarized construction site of the TAV which was arsoned and effectively shut down for a period of time afterwards. Some of the vocal anarchist and activist arrestees are facing terrorism charges based on Italy's EU-adopted laws concerning resistance to government projects. The new definition basically posits that those who effectively make it so the government can't do something (good or bad) and the EU wants it to happen, the national government is pressed to prosecute. Fred Jerome gives a fascinating account of 1950s life with his communist parents, whose apartment was a centre for cultural work for the (often blacklisted) greats such as Paul Robeson, W.E.B Du Bois, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Lorraine Hansberry. Jerome's father was arrested and spent several years in prison. They also discussed Obama's war agenda, unjust immigration policies, drones for "national security" and imperialist wars past/present.
Jerome is author of Einstein on Race and Racism (2005) and The Einstein File: J. Edgar Hoover's Secret War Against the World's Most Famous Scientist (2002).
