The Nash the Slash Tribute Show

Damn. We just lost Nash the Slash... Back in the sterile, pastel '80s, it was the music of Nash the Slash that thrilled me the most. His stage gimmick was compelling, of course--he always performed in bandages à la Claude Rains in THE INVISIBLE MAN--but what snared me was the way Nash sawed away at his electric violin like a frenzied madman as he produced his sparkling, rippling arpeggios, sounds that were beautiful, tormented, exultant, transcendent... But Nash's distinctively sharp, incisive sense of humor and unbridled play infused his work and gave it an edge that no one else had. Nash toured with Iggy Pop in the early days, and when Gary Numan saw him playing at a Toronto club, he dumped his support band and immediately tapped Nash for his 1981 Pleasure Principle Tour. I went up and down the timeline to highlight Nash the Slash's panoply of styles, drawing from not only his body of musical work but also from his cantankerously argumentative interviews and recorded bits of weirdness from his days with the Canadian prog-rock band FM. I only wish I could have painted a better picture of him as his character from SAVAGE HENRY--but thanks to the available soundbites, tonight I am able to conjure Nash the Slash from the embrace of his tomb to paint the ether with slashes of sonic brilliance. And I saved one song for the very end of the show, simply because it made me cry like a little hurt bitch as listened to it. We all should feel a sense of loss here, because as you'll hear tonight, this man left us marvelous gifts...Nash the Slash painted future fairytale nightmares with carnival colors to light up our world with a radiant, gleeful darkness. And damn, I am going to miss the hell out of him for it.

The least of his vices is gambling, which has gotten him in Dutch with the mob. He abuses his body with drugs and his soul with hookers. He’s bad and knows he’s bad, he abuses the power of his position in every way he can. Shaking down criminals, stealing evidence and selling drug dealers their immunity by jacking their drugs! Yea, this dude is rank, and we haven’t even talked about the rank scenes! But Keitels Lieutenant (we never actually get his name) reaches a wall when he is forced to investigate the sexual assault of a Nun. Her ability to forgive the perpetrators unleashes the ultimate identity crisis in a man who’s identity is rooted in self destruction – probably not a good situation. This is a film that 22 years after it’s release is still talked about – Listen to see where the 5 of us place this one in the pantheon of early 90′s classics.. That and our Top 3 “Crooked Cops”!

Chomsky - What Really Drives Foreign Policy?

Professor Chomsky spoke to a packed audience May 13. He organized his analysis of what really drives foreign policy into a 30 minute talk, which we recorded and present here. A standard justification of foreign policy centers on the supposed concept of maintaining and/or bolstering "national security." However, one must distinguish between official government assertions and actual reality. A vivid illustration of this distinction comes from observing what happened to U.S. foreign policy, and what did NOT happen, when the vaunted Soviet threat to U.S. national security collapsed into nothing. A series of new pretexts were put forward, along with an unchanged foreign policy. So the question presents itself: what is this "national security"? Security for whom? Certainly, not the population! In fact, the population might even be regarded as the enemy. Chomsky points out that our society today has ready access to all the information it needs, especially now with the help of Wikileaks, whistleblowers, and the internet, to understand and grapple with our bad government. So let's get up and do it!

Rev. Susie's "Nothing but the "Bob" 2.0!"

Tonight's show is all about soaking up the "Bob"--it's "Nothing But the "BOB" 2.0," a collection of various Dobbs-related collages, some dating from the first year of the FUNHOUSE in 1994 and many of which I had forgotten I'd put together. There are a few dicey old edits spruced up for airplay, but an old rant of mine recorded off the radio sounded better with the sound tweaked to make it sound like it was being picked up on your fillings. Other collages were missing background textures or just seemed lame--so this one got a major overhaul. It starts out with "Light Up!" by Buster Bailey and His Rhythm Busters and veers madly through clips of crazy xtian preachers, rabid Amway cultists, and bombastic motivational jerks into landscapes of bad '80s synth crap, Bob Burden on Zen Retardedness, Stang's "Bob" in World War III rant, Little Fyodor and Babushka, a sick-making children's song about how that milk got into Bobby--and two songs by the Nine Unknown Men grace the lineup: The "Bob" Song (which blew my shit away to hear the "Are you--abnormal--"Bob"?" lyric), and another instrumental of theirs backs my old "Look at the SIGNS!" rant. All in all, it's a sonic full-mind immersion designed to put you on the path to X-Day.
