The Safe Food Novement VS Agrochemical Giants Monsanto, Dow, DuPont, Syngenta and More (TWO of TWO)

Biotech corporations are now facing a huge problem of their own making, the so called super-weeds that have adapted to the multi year dousing of Roundup on 50% plus of the corn and soy growing areas in the US. Super-weeds are invading other industrial Ag. land and are spreading into gardens, parks and organic farms. Biotech corporations are currently driving the approval process for more toxic herbicides to eradicate these super-weeds, including 2,4-D, an ingredient of Agent Orange. Andy Kimbrell covers the history of Michael Taylor's astounding trip from Monsanto to the FDA. In 1992 the FDA issued a policy, that GMO crops are substantially equivalent to other crops and therefore do not require any additional environmental testing or mandatory labeling. This policy is still is in place today. The person who formulated the policy was Michael Taylor, a former attorney for Monsanto. Taylor then switched over to the USDA where he was administrator of the Food Safety & Inspection Service, then he went back to Monsanto as Vice President. He is now back with the FDA as Deputy Commissioner for Foods and was appointed the so-called Food Czar at the Obama White House.     Notes: Credits: Vandana Shiva gives an update on the Seralini Affair. Dr. Seralini used to be an official biosafety expert for the French government. He saw a feeding study by Monsanto with rats that showed early indication of both kidney and liver damage within 90 days. Monsanto then ended the study and determined there was no effect. Dr. Seralini however decided to use the same animals, protocol and feeding ingredients but continue the study for 2 years. At the end of those 2 years kidney and liver damage and tumors were so pronounced that the study became an international affair. In November 2013 the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology retracted the Seralini paper that it had published in 2012. Observers point to the Goodman factor. Richard E. Goodman, a former Monsanto scientist, had become "associate editor for biotechnology" at the journal, a post that had been specially created for him. Soon after his appointment the Seralini study as well a a study from Brazil on toxicity of Bt ingredients in GMOs were removed.

Sonali Kohatkar interviews 'Goliath' author Max Blumenthal

This week we present an extensive interview by Uprising Radio's founder Sonali Kohotkar with Max Blumenthal, author of the recent book "Goliath: Life and Loathing in Greater Israel." Blumenthal, Jewish himself, is getting attention with his frank analyses of Israel's moral collapse. He paints a startling portrait of Israeli society under the siege of increasingly authoritarian politics as the occupation of the Palestinians deepens day by day. The name Goliath is a Biblical reference to “a giant Philistine warrior who was slain by David with a stone and sling.” In today’s colloquial usage we commonly use the battle between David and Goliath as an analogy for a conflict in which one side of a war is so disproportionately and overwhelmingly stronger than the other that it is an unfair fight. The intrepid young reporter Max Blumenthal has used the term Goliath to name his latest book based on many months he spent in Israel soon after the Israeli operation on Gaza named Operation Cast Lead was over. The subject of Israel is often a touchy one and Blumenthal has indeed touched many nerves with this book. Blumenthal mentions some of the loud criticism he is getting from Israel cheerleader Eric Alterman of The Nation magazine. One of the serious problems facing advocates for justice for Palestinians (as well as for victims of US-supported military attacks, occupations, and plunder worldwide) is the "soft liberal" community that Alterman represents.

"The Sacking of Nantes, indeed!": ZAD residents respond for Feb 22nd demo

This week's show features an interview with two residents of the ZAD about the demonstrations of February 22nd in Nantes, France. Also, Anarchist prisoner Sean Swain talks about Swivilization in his weekly segment. Harold and Maude

Time Out, by The Dave Brubeck Quartet, released in 1959 on Columbia Records, was recorded at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York City. It is based on the use of time signatures that were unusual for jazz such as 9/8 and 5/4. The album is a subtle blend of cool and West Coast jazz. It peaked at #2 on the Billboard pop albums chart, and has been certified platinum by the RIAA, the first jazz album to ever achieve that status. The album was intended as an experiment using musical styles Brubeck discovered abroad while on a United States Department of State sponsored tour of Eurasia, such as when he observed in Turkey a group of street musicians performing a traditional Turkish folk song that was played in 9/8 time, a rare meter for Western music.

Kind of Blue recording sessions took place at Columbia's 30th Street Studioin New York City on March 2 and April 22, 1959. The sessions featured Davis's ensemble sextet, with pianist Bill Evans, drummer Jimmy Cobb, bassist Paul Chambers, and saxophonists John Coltraneand Julian "Cannonball" Adderley. After the entry of Evans into his sextet, Davis followed up on the modal experimentations of Milestones (1958) by basing Kind of Blue entirely on modality, in contrast to his earlier work with the hard bop style of jazz.
