Storefront for Community Design

Storefront emerged in 2011 when Councilwoman Cynthia Newbille pushed to make home and business redesign accessible to residents in her district's historic neighborhoods. They now run four programs: architects and designers offer home update consulting; facilitators help communities develop a redevelopment plan at the grassroots level; community partners provide design education; and the MOB (Middle Of Broad) studio assists storefront revision with custom projects planned by VCU students. Janie Rezner interviews Joan Kuriansky, Women's Rights advocate

Janie Rezner's guest on Women's Voices, KZYX,was Joan Kuriansky who has been an advocate on behalf of women’s rights throughout her career and has worked in the field of violence against women since 1978. She has led several national and local non-government organizations and has consulted on an international level in Russia, the NIS, the European Union and Southeast Asia. Ms. Kuriansky was the first President of My Sister’s Place in Washington DC, and served as the Executive Director of Women Against Abuse (WAA) in Philadelphia between 1981 and 1987. Under her leadership, WAA successfully advocated for the first specialized civil and criminal courts in the country, created the first program for battered women in prison as well as directed a comprehensive service program including a legal center, emergency shelter, transitional housing program, program for women charged with violence against their abusers and a multi-million public education and prevention campaign. In 1995, she directed the first technical assistance office established by the US Justice Dept. to implement the landmark Violence Against Women Act in all 50 states and the territories. Today, Ms. Kuriansky serves on various local, national and international boards including the Alliance for Girls, the Center on Women’s Policy Studies, the Caring Economy, Move the Mountain, the International Council of the New Israel Fund, the Center for National Securities Studies, and the Income Security Committee of the National Academy of Social Insurance (NASI) where she serves as a Fellow. Joan has received a number of awards for her work, including a Gloria Steinem award, named "A Woman of VIsion" by the Ms Foundation.

The Safe Food Movement VS Agrochemical Giants Monsanto, Dow, DuPont, Syngenta and More (ONE of TWO)

Campaigns for labeling genetically engineered food have swept the US from California to Washington and on to Connecticut, Maine, and Alaska, Oregon and Vermont. Actually by January 2014, according to the Center for Food Safety, 26 states had introduced mandatory labeling legislation. People who participated in these campaigns realized with surprise and shock that they were fighting for a right that is already guaranteed in 64 other countries, including all the industrial democracies that we compare ourselves to. The other shocking discovery was that such a simple and obvious demand, the right to know what food we put into our bodies was challenged wherever it was about to be codified via ballot proposals or state legislation by a powerful and extremely well funded lobby. Foremost among them of course the agrochemical corporations such as Monsanto, Dow, DuPont, Syngenta, Bayer, BASF and junk food manufacturers such as Kraft Foods, Pepsico and Coca Cola.
