That's right--those '70s/'80s/'90s country music gospel harmonizing polyester clad rednecks who've won more awards than GOD! But tonight, we won't be focusing on their silken tones...because the Statler Brothers had a secret life! These smooth masters hit all the right notes--but they also had the rare ability to hit all the WRONG ones. On two comedy albums, they masqueraded as Lester "Roadhog" Moran and His Cadillac Cowboys, portraying THE most clueless country bumpkin band of enthusiastic incompetents. Harold Reid, the basso profundo Statler, is Lester, the leader of the band, a wholly believable good-hearted son of the earth who has the worst microphone technique ever heard. His phlegmy mouthbreathing and inability to finesse a situation is lyrical. Wichita, Lester's right-hand man, plays the git-tar like a virtuoso--well, like a buncha virtuosos playing a buncha different songs at once. His hamfisted fingering has the true whiff of real badness--and his breath has a unique whiff, too, because he always has the DTs or something and is frequently missing from the stage. The rangy and scary-looking Wesley is basically a wet rat in a cowboy hat, and his singing partner Red has the wiry, tight-lipped, tense look of a career shade-tree grease monkey and traveling killer. Or Baptist. Hard to tell--not much difference. The songs are short, shaggy, and sour, punctuated by Lester's awkward exhortations to the drunk audience to "Be on yer best behav'r." Enjoy...!

Amiri Baraka shut down a section of one of downtown Newark s main streets, dignitary style. African drummers flanked the entry to Newark Symphony Hall, greeting each attendee with ancestral rhythms and setting the tone for what would be a service filled with music, poetry, remembrance and fire; the fire you light when a world-changing, shape-shifting native son has left us.
Inside, every seat was taken by those who came from around the corner and around the world for Amiri Baraka, beat poet, Black Nationalist, Marxist, Griot, Shaman, Lighter of Fires; a man whose intellectual and spiritual breadth was reflected in his perpetual search for his truest place in the world and to free others to realize theirs.
Poet Saul Williams intoned This is a stick up. Amiri get out of the coffin " and with that he conjured up Amiri Baraka s spirit and lifted ours as did Woody King Jr. and Danny Glover, Asha Bandele, Michael Eric Dyson, Jessica Care Moore and Tony Medina. And Sonia Sanchez was there
with an offering from Maya Angelou. And Sister Souljah was there. And Haki Madhubuti was there. And Cornel West was there. And Larry Hamm was there. Oliver Lake, Kevin Maynard and Avery Brooks were there. And Glynn Turman was there. And Ras Baraka was there; the son. The chosen son, the next Mayor of Newark, rhapsodizing, channeling the spirit of his father in an epoch offering - Amiri announcing from the grave the power of a father to shape his son into a reflection of himself and into his own man.

Long Island Man Speaks Out About Health Wrecked by Incinerator Ash Exposure

Tom Andaloro has a terrible story to tell. He tells it to me with strength and determination to bring out the Truth about how occupational exposure to incinerator ash ruined his health. Tom worked five years for Jamaica Ash and Rubbish Removal Company. He drove a truck hauling ash produced by the Covanta Energy Corp. municipal solid waste incinerator known as Covanta Babylon. A conveyor dropped ash into a pit in the ash storage building. A payloader bucketed up the ash and loaded his truck. The ash coated his skin, hair, clothing and shoes.
During the course of working this job he developed a very bad cough. The first doctor he went to suspected an occupational problem, but changed his mind and diagnosed allergies on Tom's second visit. No testing had been done to detect allergies. Tom found a new doctor in New Jersey. This doctor quickly assessed Tom's condition and diagnosed chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The new doctor attributed these health damages to on the job exposure to incinerator ash.
Jamaica Ash fired Tom when the company was notified that he was under the care of a doctor suffering from COPD. He lost his health insurance and union membership. Tom gave up on his Workers Compensation claim when the judge overseeing the proceeding allowed the employer to file false information about his medical history.
With all of the scientific knowledge that exists on the composition of incinerator ash, no one should be doing the work that Tom was doing without sophisticated health protective gear and clothing. Tom tried wearing a paper dust mask, but the ash went right through it. Jamaica
Ash should equip all employees who work in the ash storage building with respirators and protective clothing. The protective clothing should be washed at the end of each shift and not brought home. Boots should be provided to cover the workers' shoes so no ash was being
tracked into their vehicles and homes.
Incinerator ash has been found to contain many toxic chemicals: dioxins, PCBs, arsenic, lead, cadmium, chromium, mercury and nickel. All of these chemicals are carcinogens. These substances are endocrine disruptors. They cause harm to many organ systems. Exposure to dioxins and PCBs has been associated with increased risk of cancer, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune diseases, autism, ADHD, cognitive
impairment, reproductive problems and immune system dysfunction.
Mr. Andaloro hopes to find justice. So far he has been unable to find anything close to justice. He believes that the government entities responsible for protecting workers and assisting with job related health problems are broken and not functioning.

Lavals supporters were jailed and an 'interim' government was installed.

Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith.
