George Packer is a writer at the New Yorker and author of the new book âThe Unwinding: An Inner History Of The New America.â His book tells about American democracy is beset by a sense of crisis. "The Unwinding" shows a superpower in danger of coming apart at the seams, its elites no longer elite, its institutions no longer working, its ordinary people left to improvise their own schemes for success and salvation.

NSA SURVEILLANCE SHOWDOWN
We hear the latest words of NSA surveillance revelator, GLENN GREENWALD, WikiLeaks Publisher JULIAN ASSANGE, cyberjournalist JACOB APPELBAUM, EDWARD SNOWDEN's liason SARAH HARRISON, and cryptologist BRUCE SCHNEIER on the global espionage regime and a new generation of resistance to the 'information apartheid' and elimination of the very concept of 'individual privacy'.
First, from the just-concluded '30C3' thirtieth anniversary Chaos Communications Conference in Hamburg, Germany, attended by some 10,000 digital activists, corporate researchers and, presumably, government observers, we hear JACOB APPELBAUM, SARAH HARRISON and JULIAN ASSANGE, speaking via teleconference from the Ecuadoran embassy in London.in a panel titled 'Sysadmins of the World, Unite!'
Next, investigative journalist GLENN GREENWALD, late of the Guardian, discusses EDWARD SNOWDEN's radical NSA revelations of the past year, encription defense systems for internet users, and strategies for reclaiming privacy and information rights.
Finally, we hear cryptography and cyber security expert BRUCE SCHNEIER speaking recently to the Internet Engineering Task Force about the etymology of NSA surveillance keywords and the hidden hazards of corporate collusion with the new regime of universal digital surveillance.

Sunsara Taylor is a writer for Revolution Newspaper, a host of WBAI's Equal Time for Freethought. She has written on the rise of theocracy, wars and repression in the U.S., led in building resistance to these crimes and was initiator of the movement of End Pornography and Patriarchy: the Enslavement and Degradation of Women, a.k.a Stop Patriarchy. She led the nationwide Abortion Rights freedom Ride in the summer of 2013, launching a nationwide political and moral counteroffensive against the anti-abortion movement FOR the liberation of women. www.stoppatriarchy.org. In recent years, pornography has become increasingly violent, cruel, degrading toward women and the broader culture has been pornified. The trafficking of millions of women and girls as literal chattel in the international sex industry. At the same time a Christian fundamentalist-driven assault is imperiling abortion, birth control, real sex education, and women's lives. Abortion doc tors are killed. Women who seek abortions or even birth control--are stigmatized. 2011 saw the largest spate of legal restrictions on abortion since Roe v. Wade in 1973.

Ellen Brown: Bypassing Wall Street (TWO of TWO)

This is the second half of a one hour program on how to set up a public bank. Ellen Brown, in her most recent acclaimed books, describes the functioning of the Federal Reserve in "The Web of Debt" and gives a blueprint on how to set up a public bank in her 2013 book: "The Public Bank Solution". She came to Mendocino County, 100 miles north of San Francisco, to meet with people who already embarked on the path of creating such a county bank. You heard in part ONE of this program that a model for such a public bank exists since 1919 in the Bank of North Dakota(BND).
Maybe the biggest impact comes from the fact that the BND can make loans to fund public works projects instead of using expensive bonds. For example the BND funded a $50 million water treatment project with a loan. Consider that in regard to the debt crisis that affects so many towns and counties today. Ellen Brown used the example of a school district in San Diego, CA. They borrowed money in capital appreciation bonds and will eventually owe nearly $1 billion - or ten times the initial loan.
This program also includes comments from San Francisco Supervisor John Avalos. He is one of the strong proponent of a public bank for that city and gives a comprehensive list of opportunities awarded by such a bank. He was recorded at the June 2013 Public Banking Conference held at the Dominican University in San Rafael, CA.

This week on Sea Change Radio, we learn about the palm oil explosion over the past two decades from Rhett A. Butler, the founder of the popular environmental news website, Mongabay. Butler talks with host Alex Wise about the social, economic and environmental impact of this rapidly expanding crop in the tropical countries where it's grown - and what measures are being taken to mitigate the damage that a monoculture like palm oil can inflict.

Remember that, when the clocks all hit 01/01/00, and our entire technologically dependent civilization was plunged screeching into utter barbarism? Man, that was fucking horrific--I mean, it was awful because it didn't happen. But there sure were a lot of concerned parties drywashing their hands in gleeful anticipation of the fall of Man--which is OUR shtick, dammit, the frickin' pikers! You'll hear some of those crackpots, derange-Os, and loons tonight, seekers--as well as Vincent Price, Tonio K, the Dead Milkmen, Li'l Gruntpack, Lucia Pamela, the Cramps, Don Harrison, and the divine Noel Coward nimbly declaiming his drolly delightful song "Twentieth Century Blues." Will this material be enough to deal with the problem...or will we have to resort to the Improbability Drive? Hell, I don't know! I tried nothing, and now I'm all out of ideas!
(And yeah, I know that's a swiped line from Ned Flanders' dad.)
