Paul Z. Simons & Modern Slavery: A Libertarian Critique of Civilization

This week William talks with Paul Z. Simons, a contributor to and editor
of the journal Modern Slavery; A Libertarian Critique of Civilization
available at http://modernslavery.calpress.org. Mr. Simons is also an essayist
and former contributor/editor of Anarchy: A Journal of Desire Armed and
Out of Anarchy among other projects. Modern Slavery delves into the
conception of a modern slavery through an explicitly radical discussion
of the history and present condition of wage economies and wage slavery.
In addition, the journal showcases poetry, short stories, book reviews,
and art. If you wish to become a contributor, you can do so through the
journals website.
Among other topics, William and Paul discuss the inspiration for and
inception of the journal, some forms a post collapse society could take,
other forms of modern day slavery, and the socially chaotic potential of
horror movies.

Electronic Intifada correspondent Nora Barrows Friedman interviews professor and activist Steven Salaita about what this victory means for the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions Movement.
We follow this interview with part 1 of a debate, courtesy of Palestine Studies TV, that pits Hussein Ibish (Senior Fellow at the American Task Force on Palestine and columnist for the Nation) against Noura Erakat (Human rights attorney and co-founder of Jadaliyya) debating the question: Can the US broker a 2-State Solution? Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline

In December 2013, Canada's National Energy Board approved the Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline. The proposed 1,200 km pipeline would carry bitumen oil from the tar sands of Alberta to coast of British Columbia. Ben West is tar sands campaign director with Forest Ethics Advocacy, one of the organizations in the campaign to stop the pipeline. There's more information at forestethicsadvocacy.ca.

Ho, ho, ho it s the holiday season and we re calling, texting, emailing, and engaging in digital communication like never before, but at least, thanks to Edward Snowden who initiated a historic debate about surveillance and privacy we now know our private communications aren t as private as we thought, the NSA is tuning in and collecting massive amounts of our data. But, perhaps Judge Richard Leon s recent court decision, the recommendations of a government panel on surveillance policy and pressure on Congress to abolish the spy agency s surveillance programs will finally dump the lump of coal in the NSA s stocking it so deserves. Building Bridges will shed light on how the government is collecting, sharing and storing our data, go inside Judge Leon s ruling, analyze the government s panel's recommendations on changes to the NSA and discuss what else we need to do to protect our privacy.

Decline9 in Solidarity with Elsipogtog

This weekâs broadcast coincided with the Emergency Day of Action â Solidarity for Elsipogtog on December 2, 2013. The call was made by HWY 11 Land Defenders. Hwy 11 is the site of one of the encampments in Miâkmaq Territory where Miâkmaq peoples are protecting the water from Houston Based company SWN who are trying to conduct seismic testing for fracking on unceded Miâkmaq lands. The RCMP are attempting to repress resistance to fracking there, through harassment, violence, and arrest.
Malcah spoke with a representative of decLINE9-Cataraqui for an update on local solidarity actions in the Kingston area. decLINE9 Cataraqui is a grassroots group based in Kingston, Ontario on contested Mohawk (Kanienkehaka) and Algonquin (Anishnabek) territory. The group is âdedicated to resisting the proposed reversal of the Line 9 pipeline, a project that would see Tar Sands Oil carried through this land, from Sarnia to Montreal.â
