Decriminalization of Sex work In Canada

On this edition of Radio Basics, we explore Canada’s Supreme Court ruling this December 2013 that struck down Canada’s laws around prostitution. ICC arrests two defense lawyers

Chris Black has practiced law at the various international tribunals, and has come away a bit sobered. Recently, the ICC has arrested two defense lawyers. "The prosecution is acting like a police force instead of just another party in the case," comments Black. It rings bells of what happened in the ICTR.

John Philpot participated as a juror in an inquiry into the massacres at Sabra and Shatila in Kuala Lumpur. The principle of the Kuala Lumpur court is that crimes against peace are the greatest war crime.

David O. Carpenter MD Shares Expert Knowledge on the Subjects of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Exposure and Disease Outcome with Focus on Akwesasne

David O. Carpenter, MD, Director of the State University of New York University at Albany Institute for Health and the Environment presents information on the subjects of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) exposure and damages to health. Dr. Carpenter is an internationally recognized scientific expert on POPs exposure and health effects. POPs are contaminants of animal fats. All animal fat containing foods, including: meats, fish, dairy products and eggs contain harmful concentrations of POPs. The harm caused by POPs exposure occurs as a result of gestational exposure and lifelong accumulation of these chemical substances in the bodies of exposed individuals. Much of Dr. Carpenter's research has been conducted on the Akwesasne Reserve. The First Nations people who reside at Akwesasne have received exposures to PCBs as a result of the use and disposal of these substances at industrial facilities located in the Town of Massena. PCBs are some of the most well studied of the POPs. Research has demonstrated that Akwesasne residents suffer PCB associated health effects including diminished cognitive function, hypothyroidism and diabetes. Studies have shown that both oral and respiratory exposure are significant PCB exposure routes for this population. Respiratory exposures occur due to the evaporation of PCBs from contaminated soils and sediments. Dr. Carpenter made this presentation for Lorraine Kourofsky, Interim Director of the St. Lawrence County Public Health Department. The purpose of the presentation was to provide Ms. Kourofsky with knowledge of the POPs exposure health hazard. Cancer Action NY advocates for action by the St. Lawrence County Public Health Department to provide residents of Akwesasne and St. Lawrence County with educational outreach on the subject of POPs exposure minimization. What Dr. Carpenter states on this conference call makes clear the importance of providing the public with information on POPs exposure and damages to health. POPs exposure can be minimized by clean-up of contaminated sites and choosing to eat little or no animal fats.

Chris Hedges on Capitalism and the Resistance

On this, the holiday edition of the Global Research News Hour, we present a talk by Chris Hedges. He is also the best-selling author of several books including War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction, American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America , Death of the Liberal Class and his most recent Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt (2012) which forms the basis for the talk you’re about to hear. Hedges’s talk centres on how radical movements have been historically dismantled by the State, including through the institution of the Liberal Class, which he calls a safety valve for preserving capitalism. The following presentation was given at the West End Cultural Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba , Canada on September 21, 2013. Confronting Climate Change

The urgency of the climate crisis has compelled writers such as Bill McKibben and Antonia Juhasz to cross the line into advocacy. Bill McKibben says that “75% of Americans know that climate change is real and want something done about it.” Bill McKibben is an American environmentalist, author, and journalist who has written extensively on the impact of global warming. Bill is a founder of the grassroots climate campaign 350.org, which has coordinated 15,000 rallies in 189 countries since 2009. In late summer 2006, Bill helped lead a five-day walk across Vermont to demand action on global warming. Beginning in January 2007 he founded stepitup07.org to demand that Congress enact curbs on carbon emissions that would cut global warming pollution 80 percent by 2050. With six college students, Bill organized 1,400 global warming demonstrations across all 50 states of America on April 14, 2007. Antonia Juhasz is an American oil and energy analyst, author, journalist and activist. Juhasz founded the Energy Program at Global Exchange, a San Francisco-based human rights non-profit organization, and directed the program from July 2009 to July 2011. Peace Action named Juhasz to the Women Peacemakers Honor Roll, “For women who have made a unique and lasting contribution to work for peace and justice in the world" in July 30, 2007. Juhasz has taught at the New College of California in the Activism and Social Change Masters Program and as a guest lecturer on U.S. Foreign Policy at the McMaster University Labour Studies Program in a unique educational program with the Canadian Automobile Workers Union. The Grass is Always Greener: Scott Zeramby and Shaka King

When most people think about a controversy surrounding marijuana, they think about medicinal uses or outright legalization. But there’s also an environmental controversy. Would you be surprised to learn that indoor cannabis production is responsible for about 3% of all electricity use in the state of California? When you consider that a single industrial grow light uses about the same amount of electricity as 28 refrigerators, it starts to make sense. Our first guest this week on Sea Change Radio is Scott Zeramby, a contributor to a recent study that documents the energy consumption associated with indoor cannabis growing. Mr. Zeramby discusses the forces responsible for the shift to indoor growing, and how the study makes a case to oppose this trend and instead let the grass grow where it’s greenest — outside. After this high-minded discussion, host Alex Wise speaks with filmmaker Shaka King, whose debut feature film “Newlyweeds” depicts one young man’s complex relationship with marijuana. They talk about the problems that arise when you combine policies that criminalize cannabis and practices that unfairly target communities of color.
