Lab-Grown Beef: A Meat Pie in the Sky?

Cruelty free products abound in our 21st Century market place, from cosmetics to fake fur. But can you imagine a cruelty free filet mignon? It sounds like an oxymoron, or the stuff of a wacky sci-fi flick. But, as this week s guest on Sea Change Radio explains, lab-grown meat is here and could hit the shelves within your lifetime.
Tom Levitt, British food and farming journalist, recently chronicled the latest innovations in the lab-grown meat industry. At this point, we re talking about a $300,000 5-ounce hamburger, which begs the question, if and when this is actually developed to scale will it be high-brow fare or protein for the poor? Is this lab-grown meat a viable solution to the significant environmental impact of the global appetite for beef? How do animal rights activists and vegetarians view this potential development? And more to the point: What does it taste like? Will people really eat it? Listen as journalist Tom Levitt tries to answer host Alex Wise's litany of questions and gives us a sense of whether lab-grown meat is a realistic alternative, or just a (meat) pie-in-the-sky idea.

Mandela in America
South Africaâs legendary leader Nelson âMadibaâ Mandela was laid to rest this week after an armed struggle against apartheid that earned him 27 years of imprisonment, leadership of the African National Congress, a political victory for the nationâs majority black population, and his election as South africaâs first non-white president.
In this âFive OâClock Shadowâ tribute to Mandela, we recall his triumphal visit to the United States shortly after his release from the Robben Island prison. We hear Mandelaâs historic address to the United Nations, and his tumultuous speech to a capacity crowd at the Oakland Coliseum in June, 1990, four years before his election as president of South Africa.
Paul Grignon: Money as Debt (ONE of TWO)

An independent movie on the question "Where does money come from?" became the most successful film on banking on the internet and was praised by notables like Catherine Austin Fitts, David Korten, Hazel Henderson, and Tom Greco. With over 2 million downloads between 2006 and 2009 and translated into 20 languages, the film has remained to this date one of the extraordinary teaching tools and inspiration for the monetary reform movement. This program is an update of TUC Radio's 2009 Film on Radio version.
Even though Grignon has since produced two sequels that deal with bailouts, and stimulus packages, and how to create a nurturing economy, this first film remains a must see in the opinion of Korten, Greco, Elizabeth Kucinich, and that of many influential monetary reform organizations. Indeed the film has become more important today as the question of how to prevent another banking bailout remains unanswered.
