Voices of the victims of the drug war in Mexico

Javier Sicilia and Teresa Carmona have both lost sons in drug violence in Mexico. They are traveling around North America with Carlene Pickard of Global Exchange, telling their stories and calling for an end to the war on drugs. Colonel Wright spent 13 years on active duty with the U.S. Army before beginning a distinguished 16 year career with the U.S. Foreign service. In 2003, she resigned her diplomatic post in protest on the eve of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, one of only three State Department officials to have done so. She has since become a campaigner for peace and justice, opposing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and raising awareness of sexual assaults with in the U.S. armed forces. She has traveled on the Japanese Peace boat and with the flotilla to break the siege of Gaza. She has been a constant supporter of people whose conscience drives them to to speak out against the destructive and criminal policies of their own government. She co-authored the book "Voices of Conscience: Government Insiders Speak Out Against the War in Iraq."

Sean Swain, Blackjack & the Army of the 12 Monkeys

This week's show is about the case of two prisoners in Ohio. In 2011, the staff at Mansfield Correctional Institution (MANCI) became aware of a nascent guerilla sabotage movement starting among prisoners called the Army of the 12 Monkeys (A12M). A12M sabotage and organizing manual and propaganda began circulating among prisoners. Cells were searched in detail and James “BlackJack” Dzelijilja was found to have angry hiphop against prison he'd written and also a book on Ericco Malatesta, the long-dead Italian anarchist. Sean Swain, an outspoken anarchist prisoner and jailhouse lawyer at the same institution, was found to have an article he was writing criticizing the privatization of the prison system. Neither were found with A12M materials. As time passed, 2 other prisoners were accused and assented to membership in A12M and that Swain and Blackjack were unaffiliated. Ohio's prison court, however, disagreed. Now this movement has spread throughout multiple facilities in Ohio, such as Noble, Lake Eerie and Toledo. This episode is a conversation with Blackjack and Sean Swain, both serving in high security at Youngstown (OSP), and also with Ben Turk of Redbird Prison Abolition and supporter of Sean Swain. Cindy Sheehan and the Soapbox have been calling for a comprehensive and energetic response to the disaster at Fukushima since it happened. Cindy has been on the front lines in Japan with the people there who have been in the trenches against the Japaneses government and TEPCO and we urgently and loudly demand that the international community set aside its wars and work together for the future of our planet and humankind.
