Celebrating Michael Mandel

This week, Phil Taylor celebrates the life of York University Professor Michael Mandel, law professor extraordinaire, anti-war activist, promoter of Yiddish culture, and lover of classical music. Phil discusses Mandel’s life, tragically cut short by a rare heart disease at age 65, with international human rights lawyer, David Jacobs, and Osgoode Hall law professor Harry Glasbeek. Particular focus was paid to Mandel’s book, How America Gets Away With Murder, and Mandel’s attempt to lay charges before Carla Del Ponte at the International Criminal Court against Bill Clinton, Tony Blair, Jean Chrétien, and leaders of other NATO countries for their illegal attack on the former Yugoslavia.

The recent case of the Roma family accused of kidnapping a blond child has drawn attention to the ongoing persecution of the Roma people in Europe and abroad. Phil interviews Gina Csanyi-Robah, Executive Director of the Roma Community Centre. Although strides have been made in combating racism, there is still a long way to go.

Arctic 30 Update and Fog Harvesting

By now you may have heard about the arrest of 30 activists in the arctic by the Russian government. This week on Sea Change Radio we hear the harrowing tale from Keiller MacDuff, a Greenpeace colleague of the imprisoned group that has become known as the Arctic 30. Studio Two Three

Studio Two Three is a community printmaking studio founded in 2008 to give VCU Arts graduates a print facility where they could create work -- sharing the space and the cost of equipment. They now provide art residencies, internships, workshops, gallery shows and other events to promote printmaking as an accessible and affordable endeavor for Richmond’s artistic community. Studio Two Three has material for screenprinting, intaglio, relief, lithography and photography, and is currently outfitting a new Digital Arts Lab. Their non-profit model is not pyramid-based; instead, it’s nearly a cooperative, with funds pooled from studio members and class fees to cover basic operating costs and overhead, so that they’ll never be dependent on grants and never have to close their doors. Fracking in Manitoba

Western Manitoba has been riding the edge of an oil boom that has transformed the neighbouring jurisdictions of Saskatchewan and North Dakota. In 2012, production reached a record 19 million barrels. New technologies like fracking have enabled producers to access reserves that were previously not commercially viable. Environmentalists have raised concerns about fracking and the dangers it poses to water, land and the atmosphere. Joining to discuss the implications of fracking in Manitoba is Emma Liu, water campaigner with the Council of Canadians.

Education Property Tax Exemptions for Seniors

In the Provincial Budget last April, then finance minister, Stan Struthers announced it would eliminate school taxes paid by seniors on their principal residences by 2015. The promise will put a $50 million dollar dent in the Provincial coffers. Much of the benefit of this credit will go to wealthier seniors, while those most in need in Manitoba, including people on EIA will benefit little from the recent budget. Joining us in the studio, is Pete Hudson a Senior Scholar at the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Manitoba.

Canada's spy agency accused of violating privacy rights

OpenMedia.ca and the BC Civil Liberties Association filed a lawsuit last month saying Communications Security Establishment Canada is violating privacy rights under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. CSEC is Canada’s version of the NSA and it collects data on all digital communication for national security purposes. Micheal Vonn is policy director at the BCCLA.
