Neighborhood Resource Center

Oct. 29, 2013, 1:20 p.m.
The Neighborhood Resource Center of Greater Fulton is promoting community growth in Fulton, Fulton Hill and Montrose Heights, serving about 4500 residents and 1500 households. This area traditionally had no library, school grocery store, health clinic, or adult education center. But when the NRC opened their doors in January 2005, they began offering wrap-around services to correct the disenfranchisement that was prevalent in Greater Fulton. The NRC serves youth with childcare in a full-day Montessori preschool program, afterschool tutoring and healthy suppers, and extracurricular enrichment classes (including art, dance, music, scouts, and cooking). Other opportunities are made possible through collaboration: with Shalom Farms, teens run a produce stand every Thursday afternoon; with Tricycle Gardens, residents care for a community plot; and Bon Secours’ Care Van brings medical checkups to Greater Fulton with monthly on-location health clinics. Finally, NRC Works offers financial consultation for neighborhood adults. For more information, visit http://www.nrccafe.org.

FAMILY OF SECRETS An interview with the author, Russ Baker

Oct. 29, 2013, 10:21 a.m.
Gore Vidal called Baker's book about the Bush Dynasty and America's invisible government one of the most important books of the past ten years. In Family of Secrets Baker asks the obvious, but unanswered question, how can "such a clan occupy the presidency or vice presidency of the US for 20 of the past 28 years" with yet another Bush, Jeb Bush waiting in the wings. Family of Secrets reads and was conceived as a detective story, based on more than 500 interviews and thousands of documents, backed up by more than a 1000 footnotes. And even though the book uncovers a secret political life for all Bushes it is much more than a family expose. In this interview Russ Baker describes the powers behind the scenes, with examples from the CIA, oil and banking, and how these institutions are created by, and make use of people like the Bush family. This is a Best of TUC Radio repeat and update of the 2010 program on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the JFK assassination.

I had a fun time with a bunch of Richmond beer lovers yesterday, though I responsibly went home at a reasonable hour so I could be up bright and shiny to bring you some music this morning. One of the more entertaining members of the group is a Canadian who moved down here some years ago, so in honor of Canadian Dan, today I'm playing a set of songs from several favorite Canadian bands. Enjoy!
