Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. Non-profit organizations applying for low-power FM stations during the FCC's Oct. 15-29 application window may be bewildered by the process that was interrupted by the shutdown, and this show features reports from Radiosurvivor.com, Broadcast Law Blog, and REC Networks about the LPFM application window in the U.S. SWLing.com considers the "record" pirate radio activity during the shutdown on shortwave bands. Meanwhile, Pacifica Radio considers leasing out WBAI's airwaves in New York City, the House stenographer shouts out on C-Span during the shutdown vote, and Edward Snowden discusses his leaks in Moscow. This week as I was listening to a new album that arrived at the station, the opening of the first song reminded me of an artist I hadn't listened to in a long time. It made me realize how I've come to rely so much on my rating system in iTunes to find my "favorite" songs, despite my application of the ratings being so spotty in the early days. I should go back and make sure that all of my favorites are marked as such, but I probably won't. Anyway, today's show has a few of those old gems that I dug up as a result. Enjoy!

Vice President Al Gore talked about his book, The Future: Six Drivers of Global Change, in which he outlines the six major factors impelling progress around the world. He is a co-recipient of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.
Al Gore identifies six factors that are emerging as the major drivers of change. These factors are
1) Work: the movement of labor from West to East (outsourcing); and, at the same time, a shift towards much more automation (robosourcing);
2) Communications: the rise of the internet that has led to a wild proliferation of information, and the ability of the world's population to instantly connect with one another for a host of purposes. Including the increasing reach of the internet from the developed to the developing world;
3) Power: the shifting of power from West to East; and, at the same time, the shifting of power from national governments to smaller players, such as businesses and corporations, but also rogue players, such as guerrilla and terror organizations;
4) Demographics: the enormous increase in the world's population, and the movement of peoples both within and across national borders;
5) Biotechnology: the increasing manipulation of DNA to produce not only new organisms with novel features, but new materials and fuels as well, and
6) Climate Change: the increase in world temperatures caused by the continuing build-up of CO2, as well as the numerous other climate effects that this entails.
