Robin Hahnel is a Professor of Economics at Portland State University. He is best known for his work on participatory economics with Z Magazine editor Michael Albert. Hahnel is a radical economist and political activist, his most recent book is "Of the People, By the People The case for a participatory economy"
He speaks to Sylvia about the shut down of the US government and the precarious political gamesmanship that's going on and how this ongoing political deadlock creates a scenario where the US economy cannot recover. More importantly he speaks to how this never ending manufactured political crisis keeps the national conversation focused
on debt reduction and austerity which is counterproductive.
He also touches on the Harper governments trend to limit free speech by muzzling scientists.

Political opponents of the green movement have been depressingly successful not only in attacking the facts that underpin the struggle, but in knocking down some of its most eloquent and powerful figures, relegating to the margins what should be a universal concern: a healthy world that can be sustained into the future.
Our guest today on Sea Change Radio is Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins, one of those eloquent and powerful figures. In spite of personal attacks from those who would silence her, Ms. Ellis-Lamkins perseveres in the fight to nurture a green economy that helps to empower traditionally disenfranchised communities.
Picking up where Van Jones left off, Ms. Ellis-Lamkins is the chief executive officer of Green for All, which works to promote the green economy through policy advocacy, networking, engagement of the business community, and by mentoring a new generation of environmentalists of color. She talks about the challenges of breaking into a field dominated by white, middle-class men, how issues of urban poverty and the environment are inextricably tied, and what needs to happen to change the âmakers and takersâ narrative that pits ideological rhetoric against our shared need for global health.

Edward Said: Palestine and the Universality of Human Rights (Part TWO of TWO)

his is Prof. Edward Said's last major speech on Palestine given at UC Berkeley seven months before his death on September 25, 2003. He was born in Jerusalem in 1935, lived in exile in the US and was professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University.
Edward Said gave a report on GAZA, still under military occupation. He also referred to the first and second Intifada, the Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation, and the beginning of the building of the separation wall.
The building of Israeli settlements, the major cause of conflict and suffering, continues to this day. By the end of 2012 settlers in the West Bank numbered 342,000 - and almost half a million Israeli settlers have moved into occupied East Jerusalem and the Palestinian land around the city.
Since Said spoke in 2003 many analysts and even some governments have pointed to international law codified in the Fourth Geneva Convention that states: "The occupying power shall not ... transfer parts of its own population into the territories it occupies." Article 49 of that same convention also protects the legal right of Palestinians to resist the Israeli occupation.
Said ends with a very personal description of the healing collaboration between him and the Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim. The youth orchestra that they founded together in 1999 to bring Palestinians and Israelis together still performs in 2013.
