Massive wildfires, like the recent so-called "Rim Fire" which threatened the region near Yosemite National Park, seem to be far-too-frequent events these days. The Rim Fire, which apparently was caused by a hunter's illegal campfire is now thankfully 80% contained at the cost of about $100 million, but its effects are long-term and far-reaching, and they raise some important larger questions: Are we heading in the right direction in terms of forestry policy? Are we learning from past mistakes? And are fires like this always bad?
This week on Sea Change Radio, we welcome back Rolf Skar, the director of forestry management for Greenpeace, to break down the impact of the Rim Fire and answer our questions about the broader context of this fire and its ilk.

2013 Women, War & Peace Conference

This special Inspire Indeed episode offers background information on the VA Friends of Mali and Project Cure in anticipation of the âWomen, War & Peaceâ conference coming to the VCUâs Student Commons on September 20 and 21. The conference will include film screenings, research, symposia, and panel discussions. The conference will also pay special attention to the warfare in Mali, where Richmond Virginiaâs âSister City,â Ségou, is located. Guest speaker Allan Levenberg developed an interest in African traditional music, co-founded the VA Friends of Mali, and joined the effort to make Ségou Richmondâs âSister.â He also led the Richmond Project Team in completing three building projects for Ségou (through a grant from the Africa Urban Poverty Alleviation Program). These projects built public toilets in a kindergarten, a market, and a clinic to help improve public health. Levenberg is hoping that conference attendees Project Cure will provide medical supply shipments to Ségouâs clinic, main hospital, and blood bank. For more information, visit http://www.vcupeace.net.
