Sam Sebren, producer/creator of the NIRRH, recently asked a question to 36 people in NY's rural, Greene and Columbia counties: "Do you think capitalism is working? Why or why not? Or, if you would like to decline to answer, please state why." The anonymous assortment of friends, acquaintances, and strangers on the street were recorded on the spot, with no clue ahead as to what they were about to be asked. Workers, small business owners, retired people, and others of all ages from across the political, ethnic, and economic spectrum gave their spontaneous reply. None of their answers were edited (except in 2 cases to remove identifying info for anonymity and in one instance by request). All answers are heard here in the order they were recorded. There is no post-recording arrangement or grouping of viewpoints. Hear for yourself from a variety of everyday people - is there any consensus? As a line from the Gang of Four song, "Capital (It Fails Us Now)" says, "one day old and I'm living on credit." Few of us are economists, yet we are all born into a turbulent economic system we are expected to navigate as if it is completely natural. Through this random survey, Sebren attempts to find out how deeply "capitalism" is, or is not, on our minds. We will also hear about the Yes Men's prank on the Chamber of Commerce and some insights on daily consumer culture from comedian Tom Simmons, plus music from Pink Floyd and Suicide.

Fast Food Forward Strike Again in NYC and Nationwide
Fast-food workers in New York City and around the country struck and rallied for higher wages and union protection. They want a raise with those fries. New York's fast-food employees joined thousands of colleagues from across the country in a strike aimed at boosting their salaries to $15 an hour more than double the current minimum rate - and the right to form a union, without retaliation or any unfair labor practices. It's time for corporations to pay up.
Low-wage workers from around the country engaged in the largest walkout ever to hit the $200 billion fast food industry. "I'm not going to stay quiet," said Shaniqua Davis, 20, a Bronx resident and McDonald's worker. "I'm going to continue to fight. ... I've got a daughter to take care of. I struggle to make ends meet." Paying the bills is tough for employees who typically earn the minimum wage of $7.25 an hour. Aside from NYC, what was a nationwide walkout included 60 other cities, targeting chains like McDonald's, Taco Bell and Wendy's.

Vitiello is currently included at the "Soundings" sound art show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. This show includes recordings of bells, frogs, buildings, and human beings playing instruments.

This version of the program is divided into 6 segments so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length, but I try to keep them approximately 30 minutes in most cases.
Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. First some words about our Syria war-fever and a reading of Chidanand Rajghatta's new essay, "Why America Cannot Live Without Wars." Then on to the second half of Temujin Doran's film, "Obey."
"Obey" is about the military, political, and economic crimes of the Corporate State. It features readings from from Chris Hedges' 2010 book, "Death of the Liberal Class." In this installment, Hedges paints a bleak view of the near future and urges people to rebel nonviolently.
