They were known simply as Jane or the Jane Service because the women who answered the phones always used the pseudonym 'Jane'.... More formally their title was The Abortion Counseling Service of Womenâs Liberation.

NATO maneuvers and countries of clay

The carving-up of the old Ottoman Empire continues 100 years later. Iraq exists as an entity on a map, but it is already de-facto at least two. We know why. NATO is moving its regional headquarters from Greece to Turkey, consolidating two military commands.
In Jordan, NATO is leaving behind a bevy of troops and missiles for later unspecified use. Ideas of sovereignty and states are becoming almost mythical in that region. Whole countries are treated like clay.
The finger is on the button to launch strikes on Syria. It can happen at any time. The largest conflict since the second world war is looming into view.

National Day of Action in Support of the full decriminalization of Sex Work

The Supreme Court of Canada refused to hear the voices of sex workers who applied to intervene in the hearing that took place on June 13th in Ottawa.
On June 8th in 6 different cities across Canada sex workers and their allies took to the streets to demand the full decriminalization of sex work.
This is a report back from the rally that took place in Toronto, Ontario. It was hosted by Krysta Williams from the Native Youth Sexual Health Network and Lux a former sex work who works with Maggies. It features the Eagle Women's Singers, Monica Forrester co-coordinator of the Aboriginal Sex Workers Outreach and Education Program at Maggies, Terri Jean Bedford, Sasha Morale and a spoken word piece by Janelle Flemming.

Jim went to the Marxism2013 Conference at Ryerson University where they graciously allowed him to record some talks, including this one called "Why is capitalism in crisis?â from Pam Frache, a leading member of the International Socialists. She is a former labour researcher and current gracuate student at McMaster University. The conference was organised by the International Socialists, an organization of activists committed to helping in the construction of such a party through ongoing activity in the mass organizations of the working class and in the daily struggles of workers and the oppressed.

To help spread a heightened awareness and insight into the experiences of Filipinos who work under Canadaâs Live-in Caregiver Program, one of the streams of Canadaâs Temporary Foreign Worker Program, Toronto-based artists Althea Balmes and Jo SiMalaya Alcampo are seeking to make a grassroots, community-engaged comic book in collaboration with these faces. I had a conversation with them this past May to learn more about their project âKwentong Bayan: Labour of Loveâ.

Ronnie writes, âI fell in love with the Mendocino Coast as a 9-year-old when I came to camp at the Mendocino Woodlands and visited Homer and Lil Drinkwaterâs Remedy Store in Mendocino for an ice cream. I stood on the board sidewalk to watch a man ride down the dirt street on horseback and tie up to a hitching rail in front of the store. I knew Iâd found that spot on earth where I belonged.â But between 1951 and her move to Mendocino in 1987, she finished college at UC Berkeley, worked as an emergency room and laboratory medical technologist in Modesto, California, retired from a 17 year marriage and moved to Davis where she raised her two sons as a single mother. âWhen they were both off to college, I knew my time had come, and moved to Mendocino where Iâve now lived for 26 years.â
âThe Wildlife program started by accident a week after I moved here, when I visited veterinarian Jan Detrickâs office to get cat food, and he showed me a permanently disabled Great Horned Owl he had rescued.â It was Woodlands Wildlifeâs first bird. During the next 26 years, Woodlands Wildlife grew into Mendocino Countyâs only wildlife rehab center, and in her free time James wrote the National Historic Landmark nomination and served as President of the Board of Directors for the Mendocino Woodlands Outdoor Center for 13 years. In 2008 she led the community drive to raise $62,000 to restore the Little River Improvement Club (Little Riverâs 125-year-old Good Templarsâ Lodge and community center building) and opened it as a museum and meeting hall.
