Remarks of Journalist Jonathan Cook of Nazareth, one of the many Palestinians living within the "official" borders of Israel. 20% of the population of Israel-proper is Palestinian. Cook's 2009 remarks are eerily predictive of the Arabic struggle for survival today.
Cook points out that Palestine is fast disappearing and fulfilling the objectives of Israel's founding fathers. Over many decades, Israel has developed and refined policies to disperse, imprison and impoverish the Palestinian people, in a relentless effort to destroy them as a nation. It has industrialized Palestinian despair through ever more sophisticated systems of curfews, checkpoints, walls, permits and land grabs. Cook analyzes how Israel has transformed the West Bank and Gaza into laboratories for testing the infrastructure of confinement, creating a lucrative "defense" industry by pioneering the technologies needed for urban warfare, crowd control and collective punishment.

The US cannot compete with China economically because Wall Street sold off our manufacturing assets to inflate its own profits. To protect corporate profits, the US's only remaining source of power is its huge military--which the government is now wielding globally with blatant disregard of national sovereignty and international law.

Walmart strikers, with assistance from the OUR Walmart campaign, launched the first prolonged strike in the company's history, capping it with a rally on Friday outside the company's shareholder meeting in Bentonville, Ark. Workers began the strike more than a week ago and went on a freedom ride-inspired trek, called the "Ride for Respect," to Walmart headquarters in
Bentonville. The strike ended after the shareholder meeting. Workers from more than 30 cities joined in the ride, which was a massive education program meant to educate Walmart workers & communities about the issues of Walmart. Among these are higher wages, more hours, health care, protection against retaliation for raising workers' rights issues and Walmart's failure to provide for the safety of workers in factories overseas that
manufacture the products the retail giant sells such as the 1,239 garment workers who died at the Rana Plaza building collapse in Banglasdesh. The strikers were joined by Kalpona Alter, Ex. Dir., Bangladesh Center for Worker Solidarity, who implored Walmart to take action to insure that the factories where Wal-Mart products are made should be safe for the workers.

Cablevision Breaks Law, Then Attacks NLRB

Cablevision, the cable giant is asking the federal court to undermine the authority of the National Labor Relations Board in pursing complaints charging Cablevision with multiple violations of labor law. Since Brooklyn technicians voted to unionize more than a year ago, Cablevision has refused to bargain in good faith. Cablevision actually fired 23 workers in Brooklyn after the workers used management's "open door" policy to talk to a vice president about how the company was stonewalling their first-contract bargaining. Cablevision has illegally intimidated workers, brazenly violated federal law by firing workers for protected activity, while refusing to offer any improvements in wages to the newly unionized technicians in Brooklyn.

The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. This lecture by Jeffrey B. Perry is based on the pioneering 2-volume work of historian Theodore W. Allen.
Theodore W. Allen's tome presents a full-scale challenge to what Allen refers to as "The Great White Assumption" - "the unquestioning, indeed unthinking acceptance of the 'white' identity of European-Americans of all classes as a natural attribute rather than a social construct." Allen's thesis -- that the "white race" was invented in late 17-early 18th century Virginia and Maryland as a RULING CLASS SOCIAL CONTROL FORMATION in response to LABOR SOLIDARITY -- contains the root of a new and radical approach to United States history, one that challenges master narratives taught in the media and in schools, colleges, and universities. With its equalitarian motif and emphasis on class struggle, it speaks to people today who strive for change worldwide.
