Childhood cancer is an overwhelming diagnosis that affects everyone close to the child and their family. Connorâs Heroes is a non-profit that addresses the practical, emotional, and social needs of children with cancer and their families, providing support for the ~60 patients who are diagnosed and treated in Richmond each year. There are several ways for individuals and groups to volunteer: packing Heroesâ Bags and Backpacks (filled with distracting fun toys for the kids and helpful vouchers for the familyâs day-to-day errands), delivering gifts or decorating rooms for kids at Masseyâs Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, and mentoring patients and their siblings as Superheroes and Sidekicks. Upcoming endeavors include a care calendar to outsource basic tasks (like cooking meals, running errands, or mowing the lawn), to friends, families and volunteers. Connorâs Heroes has touched hundreds of lives and eased the practical burden of coping with pediatric cancer treatment by providing social support. Consumers are becoming more eco-conscious and little by little, investors are too. A company that shows regular profits might look like a sound investment, but if that company engages in irresponsible practices that are likely to create an environmental catastrophe, investors should know about it. Not only would investing in that company promote irresponsible behavior, it might well yield poor returns when the company finds itself facing multiparty lawsuits.
This week on Sea Change Radio, host Alex Wise speaks to Allen White and Mark Tulay, two executives from the newly launched Global Initiative for Sustainability Ratings, or GISR. GISR is a rating system that supplements an investorâs understanding of a company by focusing on environmental and social factors. Partnering with reputable organizations such as the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board, or SASB, as well as the Global Reporting Initiative, GISR has the bold ambition of transforming the very definition of corporate value in the 21st century.

Black Bloc: The legacy of the Kreuzberg Riots of 1987

This week's episode of the Final Straw features a conversation on a divisive and spectacular tactic that for many outside of the movement defines what an anarchist is: the black bloc. We speak to a comrade who was present in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin on May Day of 1987 when thousands of autonomous activists (of the Autonomen movement of which our guest was and is a member) and erected burning barricades while physically resisting the state. This date is pointed to by many as the beginning of the tactic as it's practiced in it's modern form. We also talk about beginnings of the Autonomen, how it differed from other movements before and after, gender and class in the inflammatory May Day riots in Berlin and more.
This episode was made possible by the comrades at A-Radio Berlin who translated our questions, conducted the interview and sent us transcripts and even overdubbed the audio. Much thanks. This show is a personal valentine to a true colossus of Slack who strode among us, the most sterling of SubGenius silverbacks, the ur-Ghod of the Yetinsyny...FORREST J ACKERMAN!
Forry was the most incredible OverMan I've ever known, a nurturing presence who well understood the PAIN of being one of the DIFFERENT ones. As high as he rose in fame, he never lost sight of how frightening and uncertain it is to be a lone weirdo misfit adrift in the stormy seas of Normalcy. As editor of FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND, Forry seeded the fertile, developing brains of some of the most revered masters still among us. And the lowliest geek clad in homemade cardboard robot armor not only received this Great Man's approval, that kid was imbued with the Truth that HE WAS ON THE RIGHT TRACK, even as those around him sought to derail his dreams. Forry did more than simply FEED those dreams, he made them GLORIOUS!
I knew this wonderful being so well that it tormented me to hear that he was on a deathwatch in November of 2008--thinking how empty life would be without Forry was more than my bursting heart could bear. So I tried to paint my listeners a righteous portrait of this man so that the SubGenius world would know exactly what a precious being we were losing. Forry's caregiver, the dedicated and loyal Joe Moe, wrote to say that he had played the show for Forry, who got a special sparkle from the part where I took advantage of my bully pulpit to bully a bully who had grievously bullied this great man throughout the twilight years of his life. I said the things that Forry would never bring himself to express--but it was a score that needed to be settled. All of the good wishes that poured in from every corner of the world were like a shot of adrenaline for this wonderful old man--our Forry rallied and held on to life for a few more sweet weeks, finally succumbing to the embrace of Prince Sirki the first week in December 2008.
It was time to replay it, and as I spent hours grooming the pops out of THE TIN AGE, hearing that voice once more made the computer screen blur through fresh floods of tears. But it brought home the point that the Creature Forry shall always walk among us, for he left so much of his remarkable soul behind him. "Forry, Hallelujah!" is a mix of robots and monsters, because Forry was all about BOTH. But more than that--Forry was all about US. And we shall not meet his like again.

The Fair Food Program is a watershed accord signaling the dawn of a "new day" for farmworkers' rights in Florida's tomato fields. For the first time in history, farmworkers and participating buyers and growers are working together to eradicate wage theft, sexual harassment, physical
abuse and forced labor.
But, Fast Food giant Wendy's has refused to join The Fair Food Program. To date 11 of Wendy's competitors,such as Subways, McDonalds, Burger King, and Taco Bell who have pledged to begin to tackle the flagrant exploitation of farm workers in Florida. Wendy's is the last big holdout of
the fast food giants, but the Coalition of Immokalee Workers is fanning out across the country to hold them accountable. In NYC they held a rally at Union Square and marched and rallied at two Wendy's in the area in protest.
