Our guest for Episode 69 of the Smells Like Human Spirit Podcast is Abraham Bolden. Mr. Bolden is a former United States Secret Service agent and author of âThe Echo From Dealey Plazaâ. He was personally appointed to the Secret Service White House detail by President John F. Kennedy after meeting him on April 28th 1961, and as a result became the first African-American to achieve this honor.
Following the Presidentâs assassination, Mr. Bolden became disenchanted with what he saw to be severe misconduct and corruption among his peers. He traveled to Washington in the Spring of 1964 to tell the staff of the Warren Commission about a secret Chicago assassination plot against JFK. Shortly thereafter he was arraigned on federal charges that he had solicited a bribe from a counterfeiting ring that he had helped break, and subsequently spent six years in prison. In this interview, he discusses his incredible story and other related topics. Enjoy!

Michael Mann warns that "we can't allow science to be killed. We can't allow the scientific agenda to be set by those that have vested interests to not have the truth be unveiled." Over the past decade climate science has become increasingly political. Climate scientists who have taken on public roles cope with personal threats, hacking attacks and assaults on their professional integrity. "We are not in this because we value people's opinions of us. We are not in this because we want to receive pleasant emails in the morning. We are in this because this is the truth and we have to tell it," said evangelist climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe.
Michael Mann, Katharine Hayhoe, and Bill Anderegg discuss their experiences as climate scientists in a field under the magnifying glass of politics, economics and amplified emotions with Greg Dalton.
Michael Mann is Professor of Geosciences, Penn State and author of "The Hockey Stick and the Climate Wars".
Katharine Hayhoe is Professor of Atmospheric Sciences at Texas Tech University.
Bill Anderegg is Doctoral Student at Stanford.
Greg Dalton founded Climate One at The Commonwealth Club in 2007.

Directors and sister and brother Lisa and Rob Fruchtman filmed and and directed the inspiring film Sweet Dreams . . which follows a remarkable group of Rwandan women as they emerge from the devastation of the 1994 genocide where almost a million minority Tutsis were killed by Hutus in one hundred days, many by those they knew as friends and neighbors. Kiki Katese, Rwandan playwright founded the first women's drumming troupe in Rwanda, breaking the taboo against women drumming, bringing together women from both sides of the conflict, and from there opening Rwanda's first ice cream store..to create a future of hope and possibility for themselves. Both the drumming and ice cream projects embody the idea that Rwandans need not only the means to survive, but also the means to live--ways to reconnect with joy, hope and previously unimagined possibilities--coming back to life after the horrific genocide they have endured. .
A beautiful. joyful film set in the lovely countryside of Rwanda-with powerful drumming by the womens drum troupe. The film has already generated attention for these remarkable Rwandan women. They received the prestigious 2012 Common Ground Award (past recipients include Desmond Tutu, Ellen Sirleaf Johnson, Jimmy Carter) Sweet Dreams has screened at the United Nations and in film festivals around the world.

Joseph Mangano: Post Fukushima Increases in Thyroid disease in Newborns on the West Coast of the USA

On March 7, 2013, an article was published in the Open Journal of Pediatrics. Co-written by Joseph Mangano and Dr. Jeanette Sherman it stated that in the first 15 weeks, after the fallout from Japan arrived in the US, the number of newborns with Hypothyroid disease increased by 28% on the West Coast while declining by 3% in the rest of the country. Mangano presented this report on March 12, 2013, at the Fukushima Symposium at the New York Academy of Medicine in New York City.
Mangano is the Executive Director of the Radiation and Public Health Project. He is a public health administrator and researcher.

How do we advance sustainable practices in a world driven by the profit motive? Public policy that mandates the use of renewables by private companies is one way. Not surprisingly, though, this sort of approach is often blockaded by those private interests. This week on Sea Change Radio, host Alex Wise talks with Ezra Garrett, the Chief Sustainability Officer from Pacific Gas and Electric, or PG&E, a private company that appears to be getting out of the way of sustainability advocates. This is no small matter, given that PG&E has a veritable monopoly in California, the nationâs most populous state. We hear from Mr. Garrett about PG&Eâs track record on sustainability, what they are doing to get to the mandated threshold of 33% renewables within the next seven years, and whether they feel more comfortable backing policy or backing off from politics altogether.

Afternoon session on the medical and ecological consequences of the radioactive elements that were released during the Fukushima nuclear reactor meltdowns and explosions. Radioactive elements continue to be spread by Japanese government policy and the continuing leakage of radioactive reactor cooling water into the Pacific Ocean.
Dr Marek Niedziela, Department of Pediatrics, Poznan University of Medical Sciences, Poland presented by videotape on the "Differential diagnosis of ultrasonographic thyroid lesions in children" based on his work following the Chernobyl nuclear reactor explosions. By request his preliminary research was not for release outside of the symposium.
