Ceres Conference Preview: Lester Snow and Bennett Freeman

The Ceres Conference is an annual gathering where organizations as different as the Sierra Club and Shell come together to discuss ways to accelerate the transition to a sustainable world. On the eve of the conference which takes place May 1st and 2nd in San Francisco this year, we thought it would be worthwhile to get a sneak peek at some of the Ceres speakers.
This week on Sea Change Radio, we hear from two Ceres speakers. First, we are joined by Lester Snow, the executive director of the California Water Foundation. He gives us an overview of some compelling water issues concerning the American West. Then, host Alex Wise speaks to Bennett Freeman of Calvert Investments, an investment company that has been on the forefront of the socially responsible investment movement since the 1980s.

Not that long ago we had a government which refused to listen to the people. Now we are unsure of what is heard by the govt and what isn't. Something coherent has been lost. The date of this show, April 20, is the anniversary of so many "issues." Hitler's birthday, the anniversary of Waco and Oklahoma City and Columbine. (It's also my dad's birthday.) So much of modern experience is beyond any kind of ordinary comprehension, because it is beyond our senses and systems. What it does is use examples of favorite modernist musics (mostly ambient instrumentals but also containing songs) in order to call for revolution. Yes, a call for blood. Listen close or you'll miss it. Each musical piece is a "text" to add to all the other texts.

Timothy Mousseau: Chernobyl, Fukushima and Other Hot Places - Biological Implications

When the biologist, Professor Tim Mousseau, concluded this talk by showing heartbreaking pictures of the birds of Chernobyl and their tumors and birth defects, the physician and anti nuclear campaigner Dr. Helen Caldicott stepped up to the podium to thank him. She said: "I want to pay homage to Tim Mousseau, who with his colleagues is actually endangering his life by going into extremely high radioactive areas doing pioneering work, which is going to change the concept of radiation exposure to humans. What is happening to the animals, the insects and the plants is going to happen to us."
Mousseau is a Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of South Carolina. For 13 years he and his scientific collaborator Anders Moller from the University of Paris, Sud, have done research in the most contaminated areas of Chernobyl. When Fukushima Daiichi exploded they began field work there as well. They study birds, insects, microbes, and plants at over 1,000 sites, creating the most diligent inventories of each study area and returning year after year. They found significantly increased rates of genetic damage in direct proportion to the level of exposure to radioactive contaminants.
