Rev. Susie's Experiment in TERROR!

This is a retool of my "Fear!" show--in listening to it, I found several very dark parts that tie in beautifully with the mayhem of the past week. It was a good one then--I added some bits, and it's a much, MUCH creepier one now. Kicked off by the immortal and clichéed words by FDR, there is music by Oingo Boingo, Art, the Funky Bardos, Bob from SESAME STREET, Klaus Flouride (that's the way he spells it), Ed's Redeeming Qualities, the Flying Lizards, Elements of Style, Magazine, Ultravox, the Art of Noise, the Misfits, Guadalcanal Diary, the cabaret-act duo Joe & Eddie, Mark Stewart & The Maffia (ditto on that spelling, too), and a duet between Lydia Lunch and Clint Ruin on "Don't Fear the Reaper," this show is chock full of timely weirdness. Add a dollop of mind-blowingly dark topicality by MisteRogers (of all people!) and rants by Jack Van Impe, Garner Ted Armstrong, Bob Tilton, the lisping Peter Barkhuisen, and Jimmy Swaggart raving about "that black night in Massa-two-shitts!", and mix it all with background sounds like quirky movie themes by Laika & the Cosmonauts and sweeping cinematic textures from Pink Floyd's underrated "Atom Heart Mother" suite--and this is a show that will hunt you down and fucking KILL YOU for not listening to it. Or even if you DO listen to it, it could still take your ass OUT. Beware, because FEAR is in the air; times are crazy, tension runs high, and no one is responsible for their actions.

Nuclear waste to be shipped 2000km by road

Last year Stephen Harper and Barack Obama agreed to ship liquid waste containing weapons-grade uranium from Chalk River near Ottawa to a site in South Carolina. Gordon Edwards is president of the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility. He says it’s the first time material this hazardous has been shipped by road.

Preventable Deaths: The Texas Explosion & The Tragedy Of Workplace Fatalities with Tom O'Connor, Dir., Ntl. Council for Occupational Safety & Health The latest work place tragedy, the explosion last Wednesday at Texas’ chemical and fertilizer plant left at least 14 people dead and more that 160 injured. In the last year, on average 4,500 people died in workplace accidents. But, while the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has jurisdiction over 7 million workplaces the U.S. spent only $558 million a year on OSHA, as increasing numbers of workers died. With a gutted agency it’s not uncommon for some companies to go years without inspection. The Texas plant hadn’t been inspected since 1985 and even then despite being cited for serious violations for storage of anhydrous ammonia was fined a mere $30. *************************** Remembering the Triangle Fire with Sophia Henderson Holmes Poet Sophia Henderson Holmes reads from her epic poem commemorating the lives of those who died at the Triangle Fire. The poem itself serves as well as a tribute to Sophia herself, who has since passed on but has left us her stirring words and the challenge to organize for workers' rights.

Mining license approved in wake of violence in Guatemala

After more than two years of delay, the Guatemalan Minister of Energy and Mines (MEM) announced on Wednesday, April 3, that it had approved the exploitation license for Tahoe Resources’ Escobal mine in San Rafael Las Flores, Guatemala. The announcement comes less than two weeks after four indigenous Xinca leaders were abducted while returning from a community referendum in El Volcancito, in which more than 99 percent of people voted against the Escobal project. One of those abducted was found dead the next day. Amanda Kistler communications manager for the Center for International Environmental Law talks with Scott Price about the context to this mining operation and the controversy surrounding it.

Deconstructing Edward Bernays' 'Propaganda' (Part 2)

Edward Bernays, the 'Father' of Public Relations and highly influential in informing modern advertising techniques, quite literally wrote the book on Propaganda. It was released in 1928 and makes the case that "the conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society (p.9)." In this podcast series, Guy Evans examines just how influential Bernays' ideas were, and details the resulting impact in relation to public relations, advertising, celebrity culture, and democracy itself. This week, Chapter 2 is under the microscope, a chapter that further details the scientific underpinning that explains how the minority influence the majority. Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith.
