Fighting Poverty and Manitoba's 2013 Budget

On April 16, the Province of Manitoba released its 2013 budget. Despite the demands of anti-poverty activists, there are very limited measures to address affordable housing for poor Manitobans. Dennis Lewycky is the executive director of the Social Planning Council of Winnipeg. He spoke to Mud and Water the day before the budget was released. There's more information at spcw.mb.ca.

OBAMA ON SOCIAL SECURITY-
'LET THEM EAT CAT FOOD.'
To the delight of Republican leaders, and the astonishment of pensioners, veterans, the disabled and organized labor, President BARACK OBAMA offered a unilateral proposal on April 10, 2013 to make de-facto cuts in Social Security benefits by linking them to a "Chained Consumer Price Index" (CPI).
Obama thus became the first Democratic President to advocate such a radical reduction in the fiscally stable, 8-decade old Social Security program initiated by President FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT - and a betrayer of his own 2008 campaign promise to "protect Social Security."
Obama's chained "CPI" proposal is also known as the "cat food" strategy: As impoverished recipients are forced to spend their benefits on escalating medical, housing and other costs, less money is available for food, as in switching from, say, roast beef, to bologna and, ultimately, to "cat food."
Obama's CPI plan says, in effect, to Social Security recipients: "Since you're obviously SPENDING less on food -- we shall therefore GIVE you less benefits!"

MICHAEL PARENTI ON RIGHT WING CONSPIRACIES
In the early 1970s, Richard Nixon's Attorney General John Mitchell famously claimed that ''This country is going so far to the right you won't recognize it."
Today, 40 years later his prophecy has come to pass, with such conservative initiatives as corporate deregulation, media consolidation, domestic austerity, repression of civil liberties, military adventurism, and the supremacy of the national security state. A conservative republican cohort has now pushed America so far to the right that, for the first time in history, a Democratic party President - Barack Obama - has openly proposed major reductions in Social Security benefits.
America's rightwing tailspin is part of a conservative global conspiracy that seeks to impede the development of so-called "social democracy."
That's the thesis of social critic and political scientist MICHAEL PARENTI, author of "God and His Demons." Parenti spoke recently at the Deep Politics Conference about the role of conspiracy in government operations, and the suppression of critical analysis of self-serving right wing social and military conspirators.

Dangers of global rush for aviation biofuel

With profits increasingly threatened by rising fuel prices, airlines are turning to biofuels both to reduce costs and to give the industry a sustainable image. But the consequences for people in the global south will be disastrous according to a recent report by the Oakland Institute. Lukas Ross is author of the recent report Eco-Skies: The Global Rush for Aviation Biofuel.
Tanker safety plan called an insult to British Columbians

Coffee sales fund social justice in Guatemala

Cafe Justicia is an organic coffee produced in the highlands of Guatemala by the Campesino Committee of the Highlands. The committee processes and markets coffee produced by individual local cooperatives. This means that the growers can avoid many of the middlemen who keep most of the profits from sale of the coffee. The Campesino Committee of the Highlands provides medical care, schools and libraries for local indigenous people. It also works to redistribute land, both for agriculture and for homes for the landless poor. General coordinator Leocadio Juracan came to Canada in March 2013. He was accompanied on his speaking tour by Steve Stewart of BC CASA. Here is Steve Stewart introducing Leocadio Juracan at an event that took place at Rhizome Café.

THe Choice of Telida Village as my âjumping-offâ point was no snap decision. The planning work which went into finding THe Right Spot for my First Winter of Alaskan wall-tenting was not something to be taken lightly. Finding An Area with THe Remoteness which Iâd come to Alaska in search of was not the work of an afternoon-- nor a weekend-- it took literally scores of phone calls to knowledgeable Alaskans in resource management and law enforcement positions across the State.
I fondly recall one Key Conversation with Lands Manager Clark Cox of Alaskaâs Department of Natural Resources. DNRâs Cox was emphatic about the need to break free of the Stateâs road system. He informed me that even a river with road-based boat launches was no solution. Iâd be passing recreational cabin after recreational cabin for up to 100 river-miles before reaching THe Remoteness which I was after. Clarkâs personal recommendation was Iliamna or McGrath-- my choice of Telida Village--200 river-miles above McGrath on THe Super-Remote Upper Kuskokwim stemmed from Lands Manager Coxâs Super-Helpful Advice.

She speaks of her trips to Afghanistan in support of the youth who founded the Afghan Peace Volunteers and the Afghan women she and Voices for Creative Nonviolence have supported as they work to establish an alternative to the violence created by the US Military presence. She has made some nine trips to Afghanistan.
