How Big Companies Rob You

April 4, 2013, 12:50 p.m.
How Big Companies Use Plain English To Rob You Blind with David Cay Johnston. “No other modern country gives corporations the unfettered power found in America to gouge customers, shortchange workers, and erect barriers to fair play. A big reason is that so little of the news . . . addresses the private, government-approved mechanisms by which price gouging is employed to redistribute income upward.” The Best Climate Projections Are Extreme Climate scientists agree that the planet is warming, but there is a wide range of projections as to how hot it’s going to get. An analysis from scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research finds that the more alarming estimates may be the most accurate. John Fasullo, one of the climate scientists responsible for the analysis, joins Steve Curwood to discuss the future of our warming planet. Why is America always at war? with Danny Schechter, filmmaker and blogger. Climate Change Is Simple with David Roberts, staff writer for Grist. We are the "Heart of Darkness"

April 3, 2013, 7:54 p.m.
Chinuya Achebe was famous in part for his rejection of Joseph Conrad's position in the Western canon. Achebe strongly argued that "Heart of Darkness" was a thoroughly racist work that actively dehumanized Africans to an extent beyond Conrad's contemporaries. A staple in undergraduate classes, it should be properly deconstructed. Instead, it is used as a template to describe conflicts in Africa. Aimable Mugara of RwandaHumanRights.com covers major stories centered on Rwanda. A woman running against a U.S. client remains in prison, and the UN plays favourites as Congo is invaded.

Smells Like Human Spirit Podcast - Financial Terrorism

April 3, 2013, 6:11 p.m.
One of the most important ingredients needed for democracy to function is belief. The belief in freedom, the belief in hard work, and the belief in justice are key cultural values that are reinforced through the usage of symbols, mythology, and what was called in more honest times, propaganda. The belief in justice specifically points to the inherent desire common to all human beings for a level playing field. As children, we react with outrage if someone is afforded an unfair advantage, but somehow, in adulthood it becomes a tired cliché that ‘life just isn’t fair’. Although we’ve inherited a culture whereby your achievements are never quite good enough, born out of a capitalist mindset that stops at nothing, not even the future of the planet, in the pursuit of ever-increasing success, most people want a simple existence. We are often told that the general public cause their own problems, the scandalous blame heaped on middle-class families following the recession instantly comes to mind, but there’s quite clearly a fairly tyrannical group of people that exempt themselves from their own laws and society’s norms, all the while demonstrating an incredible lack of empathy for anyone but themselves. We could call these people the criminal class. In this episode of the Smells Like Human Spirit Podcast, Guy Evans examines the latest victims of the criminal class, the people of Cyprus. Spread the word, enjoy, and peace!

Cancer Prevention vs Fundraising for Cure Research

April 3, 2013, 5:20 p.m.
The good American people are talking about and doing cancer prevention that involves educating on the subject of carcinogen exposure minimization and eliminating carcinogens from the environment. This is truly the work of eliminating cancer. The bad corporate people are talking about and doing fundraising for cancer cure research. These greedy, unenlightened people have used the governmental public health entities and the American Cancer Society to promote a cancer dialogue that focuses only on fundraising for cure research and early detection of cancer cases. They do this to direct public discourse and action away from carcinogens and the need for carcinogen exposure minimization. These ruthless corporate people do not care about the suffering caused by cancer. They are obsessed with making money and using chemicals carelessly has been a big money maker in the past. The greed driven ones hope to avoid accountability for the cancers that they have caused with their careless chemical use by promoting a cancer dialogue that leaves out all mention of the carcinogens used by corporations and the carcinogenic pollutants released by corporate agricultural and industrial activity. The good American people will prevail and bring an end to the careless chemical uses of the bad American people. We will do this in love of the Earth Mother, in love of scientific knowledge, in love of good health, in love of the Truth, in love of justice, in love of Beauty and in love of doing what is right. We will eliminate cancer and much of our cancer elimination work will involve driving the greedy corporate people out of government. We will force the bad corporate people to relinquish their control over our government. We will do this as we create a new America. We will bring an end to the government corruption and the uncontrolled power of corporations that causes cancer. You can become a cancer elimination activist by visiting our websites, the Cancer Elimination Act website at cancereliminationact.wordpress.com and the Cancer Action NY website at www.canceractionny.org. We embrace our fellow Americans who choose to utilize scientific knowledge for the elimination of cancer. Viva the environmental protection revolution!!
