Last weekâs Supreme Court proceedings prompted some public officials and media outlets to direct scornful language at LGBT Americans. As a personal issue about identity, equality and love becomes so publicly contentious, imagine how difficult growing up gay or lesbian could be right now for adolescents who don't receive positive social messages about their orientation. LGBT teens are often subjected to bullying, often feel insecure in their families, schools and communities, and are 4 times more likely to attempt suicide than the average teen. ROSMY is Richmondâs support center for LGBT youth, helping them develop security, pride, and even leadership and advocacy skills as they grow in a community of encouragement. ROSMY offers support groups and leadership engagement programs to nurture youthsâ identities, maintains a 24/7 help line, and provides education on inclusivity for families, schools, and the RVA community. Michael Skelly on Wind Energy: Blowing Over Barriers

Promoters and detractors of wind power have one point of agreement â both see the transmission lines that carry wind energy as inefficient and very expensive to build. If wind power is going to fulfill its potential as the natural, pristine and infinitely renewable energy source that it could be, this obstacle will have to be overcome.
This weekâs guest on Sea Change Radio, Michael Skelly, has a solution that he thinks will move us past the transmission obstacle and into an era of efficient wind power use and transfer. His company, Clean Line Energy Partners, believes it has a better way to transport wind energy, using a new technology based on the old standard direct current electricity: high voltage direct current transmission lines. Listen now as Skelly describes how a 19th century technology may be the answer to the 21st century energy question.

ARKANSAS: NUCLEAR PLANT FATALITY
AND TAR SANDS OIL PIPELINE SPILL.
The Exxon-operated "Pegasus" oil pipeline ruptured in Mayflower, Ark. over the weekend, threatening local lakes and rivers with heavy "dilbit" crude from Canadian tar sands.
Meanwhile, in Russelville, Ark., a million-pound turbine component at Arkansas Nuclear One fell during a power disruption, killing one worker and seriously wounding four others.
[UPDATE: "Entergy" plant operators now admit EIGHT workers were injured, not four.]
An additional surge sent Unit Two into emergency shutdown, with steam releases to dissipate remanent heat in the reactor core.
ARNIE GUNDERSEN, a former nuclear plant operator and expert witness with Fairewinds Associates, analyses the fatal incident and the vulnerability of aging atomic facilities; and
DAVID LOCHBAUM of the Union of Concerned Scientists provides a national overview of American nuclear policy during his recent address to the NY Academy of Medicine on the consequences of the Fukushima disaster.
Cruzbike Maria Rides RAAM for Her Sister

From her home in Lumberton, North Carolina, Maria Parker, a mother of four young adults, talked to us about a race she is doing across America for her sister who has terminal brain cancer. Called RAAM, it is the worlds toughest bike race, far more challenging than the Tour de France. Just qualifying for it, much less finishing it, is a challenge of unspeakable proportion.
Nor is Maria doing this for fame or for the bike company (Cruzbike) she owns with her husband and a partner. In the words ahead, you'll hear from a woman much humbled by the challenge she has ahead of her and by a sister who maintains her optimism for others despite the illness that has overcome her.

David Freeman: My Experience with Nuclear Power

Freeman served in Chief Executive positions at the largest power authorities in the world, including New York Power Authority, the TVA in Tennessee Valley, and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
In spite of, or maybe really because of, being the consummate insider in energy production, Freeman is one of the most brilliant, funny and knowledgeable critics of fossil fuels and nuclear power. Freeman closed down 8 nuclear reactor projects during his tenure as Chief Executive at the TVA, and one more when he was General Manager of the Sacramento Municipal Utilities District in California.

I admit up front that this is a very dense, verbal show. What the Firesign Theatre did with humor and imagination had a profound effect on my thinking and writing. What I wanted to do tonight was take what is a little known work by the group, their final Columbia lp, In the Next World You're on Your Own, and create a conceptual context for a lingering listen, using earlier materials to set the stage (and provide overlapping connections). That context is a form of psychedelia. But this trip goes beyond humor. It's social comment, American history, a future of Cops-like tv shows, insane game shows, a baseball game, the Academy Awards, and media terrorism. The phrase "Eat flaming death, fascist media pigs!" comes from here. Be part of the future, and listen closely.
Israel Shahak on Israeli Apartheid (4/20/1995)

On his last visit to the US in 1995, Prof. Shahak, whom Gore Vidal called âthe latestâif not the lastâof the great prophets,â described how apartheid was functioning in Israel and the OT following Oslo and between the 1st and 2nd Intifadas. He also spoke of his book, âJewish History, Jewish Religion: The Weight of Three Thousand Years,â in which he outlined the connections between Talmudic Judaism and modern day Israel with its pre-modern mentality. Shahak was born in Poland and was imprisoned by the Nazis in Bergen-Belsen from which he immigrated to Israel following the war.
