Children's Home Society of Virginia

The Childrenâs Home Society of Virginia is a statewide advocate for children who need homes and a resource for adults who provide for these children. Since the year 1900, this full-service adoption agency has placed 12,500 children with families who will raise them lovingly in a stable and safe home. Infants may be placed for adoption if their birth parents do not have the resources to care for them, and children struggling in foster families may be adopted into a permanent home rather than left in the system. EarthCraft Virginia, one of the longest-running green construction organizations (est. 1999) in the country, purposes to 'change the way that [Virginia] builds buildings.' Using energy modeling simulations, experienced building scientists, and sustainable construction plans, the builders who learn from EarthCraftâs programs seek to conserve environmental resources, engineer for market advantage on their homes, and create a high-performing and extremely sustainable residence. EarthCraft offers single-family programs (either gut renovation or complete builds), a multi-family program, a light commercial program, and are planning a community program for the near-future. Working from the principles of 'Environment, Equality, and Economics,' and seeking to fill the residential constructional and instructional niche, EarthCraft is thriving and leading a green-building revolution. They have certified 1700 homes in the last 6 years; they have collaborated with the Housing Development Authority and Habitat for Humanity, becoming a resource for green building practice and standards; and their modifications often result in 30% more energy efficiency than the current building code requires. The Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy seeks to mobilize individuals and congregations to serve positive social agendas, support the most vulnerable communities and interests, and advocate for social justice statewide. Faith-based social initiatives are known for emerging from altruism and redressing moral wrongs with conviction and persistence. Among the current foci of the Interfaith Center are healthcare access (with the VA Consumer Voices for Healthcare), environmental conscientiousness (with VA Interfaith Power and Light), and poverty attenuation in Virginia. The VA Interfaith Center works closely with The Commonwealth Institute for Fiscal Analysis (as well as sundry social change and faith-based organizations) to shape public policy so that it benefits the less-fortunate. I speak to CCAP organizer Ivan Drury, CCAP works mostly on housing, income, and land use issues in the Downtown Eastside (DTES) of Vancouver so the DTES can remain a low income friendly community.
Ivan speaks about the struggle against gentrification in the DTES neighborhood, how the city and developers literally have a blueprint of how to fundamentally change the area. How CCAP did an extensive report meeting with hundreds of area residents asking them what kind of neighborhood they wanted yet this report is getting ignored and the developers and local media are engaging in the decades old debate about urban renewal, how long are we as a society going to tolerate and engage in these old discredited arguments.
The residents of the DTES want a say in what happens in their community, they want the same dignity afforded other communities, mainly to be listened to and collaborated with.

More and more charitable donors endeavor to create a multiplier effect by giving alongside others. Pooling resources to enact a communal decision about charity is a great way to turn your small gift into a larger gift -- or your large gift into a grant! Interfaces like GivingChange.org inform people about raising awareness of and mobilizing donations for charitable causes. This 'Giving Circle' model has recently gained momentum in philantrophic 'circles.' Today's Inspire Indeed welcomes Lisa OâMara, Vice President of Donor Engagement for The Community Foundation, and Robert Dortch, co-founder of the giving circle Ujima Legacy Fund. The Community Foundation serves Greater Richmond by garnering financial support for burgeoning giving circles. The Department of Public Works coordinates recycling, trash collection, storm recovery, and municipal maintenance and infrastructure. You may not think about snowplowing, graffiti, leaf collection, street sweeping, restoring electrical power, and recycling that old microwave -- until a problem presents itself! Fortunately, Richmond's Department of Public Works has dedicated staff and work crews who plan for and manage these municipal issues, keeping Richmond safe, clean, and productive. The Department steps up in the event of an emergency, of course, but they also strive to improve the quality and effectiveness of their services on a regular basis. The Department is streamlining the trash collection schedule; said changes begin the week of July 9, 2012. Caring for those with special abilities

It is estimated that about 1-3% of the Canadian population lives with a developmental disability (DD). This refers to people with limited cognitive abilities and adaptive functioning which have their onset before the age of 18. The causes of DDs are varied and often unknown and can be a combination of both genetic and environmental factors (for example trauma during birth). This population often has specific health concerns and can be complex yet rewarding patients to work with.
On this week's show, we spoke with Dr. Bill Sullivan, a family doctor at the Surrey Place Centre in Toronto, about health care for people with DDs. Dr. Sullivan is leading a provincial initiative to improve the health and quality of life for people with DDs through training and resource development for primary health care providers.
On the show, we speak about how having a DD can affect one's health outcomes as well as specific health concerns that members of this population might have. We learn that there are surprisingly few health care providers that specialize in care for this population. How can we improve upon this lack of training and education? Tune in to find out.

Canada Border Services raid highlights risks for undocumented migrants

There are thousands of undocumented workers in Canada. Their stories are mostly hidden from view. But a recent raid on a construction site in Vancouver put migrant workers in the spotlight. The raid has sparked outrage after it was revealed that it was filmed for a U.S. reality TV show about the work of the Canada Border Services Agency. Byron Cruz is with Sanctuary Health, an organization that was created after Canadaâs new immigration laws came into effect last year.
