Dr. Sheary Johnson is the President & Founder of Better People Inc. Better People has been working with Southside Richmond families for over two decades, and though they are not well-known in the broader community, they have provided life-changing support for the youth and families they serve. Dr. Johnson shares information about Better Peopleâs programs and how people can get involved. She has been a community change-maker for years, and was the first African-American graduate from James Madison University (then Madison College).
Oak Table and the Jack Frost Challenge

HandsOn RVA connects eager volunteers with service opportunities and has a contact database of 14,000 Richmonders as of 2012. Vanessa has a history of civic engagement both individually and institutionally, and this is reflected in the scope of HandsOn, sourcing volunteers for small tasks (like sewing curtains, creating art, or programming online material) and advising institutions organizing for big tasks (like educating board members). There are many adults in our community with intellectual disabilities that prevent them from being able to live independently. Though these individuals need some assistance in their daily living, they still have a lot to share with the community. Support One is a nonprofit that serves this population, ensuring that adults with intellectual disabilities are treated in a manner that respects their individuality and nurtures their talents and interests. What would it mean to live 'a higher & more ethereal life' we ask this week in a successor program to last week's show. The quote is from Henry David Thoreau's classic Walden which we keep reading, and which details the shed he built by Walden Pond in 1845 at a cost of $28.12½ (i.e. around $1000 nowadays). Our main presentation is a 2013 interview about Direct Action to resist the US government sponsored armed gangs who are attempting to evict people from their homes. We supplement this with short readings from John Taylor Gatto's Underground History of American Education and from Suelo.

Substance abuse is an issue ubiquitously related to homelessness; some people fall into homelessness due to their addiction, and others turn to drugs or alcohol to cope with homelessness. Ensuring that people have a way to overcome addiction is often the key to returning healthy, functional people to a home. Todayâs program features Karen Stanley, Chief Executive Officer of the nonprofit CARITAS. Sheâll discuss homelessness and addiction in the context of one of CARITASâ services, The Healing Place. The Healing Place supports homeless adults who are either in recovery from or currently dealing with addiction. Inspire Indeed also welcomes Bob, a successful former client of The Healing Place who now gives back to the mission as a peer mentor. Although the majority of people living in homelessness are single adults, our community has been seeing a growing number of families (with children) who are without a home. Some of this may be attributable to the economy, job loss, and difficulty finding employment, but often there are additional issues (such as addiction or domestic violence) that families must resolve before they can reach self-sufficiency. Kimberly Tucker, the Director of Family and Community Services at St. Josephâs Villa, speaks about families and children experiencing homelessness, and whatâs unique about some of the challenges they face.
