Substance abuse is an issue ubiquitously related to homelessness; some people fall into homelessness due to their addiction, and others turn to drugs or alcohol to cope with homelessness. Ensuring that people have a way to overcome addiction is often the key to returning healthy, functional people to a home. Todayâs program features Karen Stanley, Chief Executive Officer of the nonprofit CARITAS. Sheâll discuss homelessness and addiction in the context of one of CARITASâ services, The Healing Place. The Healing Place supports homeless adults who are either in recovery from or currently dealing with addiction. Inspire Indeed also welcomes Bob, a successful former client of The Healing Place who now gives back to the mission as a peer mentor. Although the majority of people living in homelessness are single adults, our community has been seeing a growing number of families (with children) who are without a home. Some of this may be attributable to the economy, job loss, and difficulty finding employment, but often there are additional issues (such as addiction or domestic violence) that families must resolve before they can reach self-sufficiency. Kimberly Tucker, the Director of Family and Community Services at St. Josephâs Villa, speaks about families and children experiencing homelessness, and whatâs unique about some of the challenges they face. Weâll take some time to address the myths and realities about the issue, and to hear stories about the individuals and families who become homeless. To provide context on the issue of housing and homelessness, Inspire Indeed welcomes Kelly King Horne, the Executive Director of Homeward. Kelly is a local expert who asks us to consider the issue of homelessness in our community. Since its inception in 1846, the orphanage that would become the Virginia Home for Boys and Girls has been revitalizing and renewing the lives of at-risk youth, teaching them behavioral and educational skills for a happy, healthy, and productive future. This community resource provides residential group counseling (where youths live with âteaching parentsâ in a collaboratively nurturing household) and alternative education at the John G. Wood School (where youths are tutored intensively with individualized attention). Inspire Indeed speaks with Claiborne Mason, President of VHBG, and Pendle Whisnant, John G. September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. In case you havenât heard, we are facing childhood obesity rates that are approaching epidemic levels. Currently, nearly 1 in 3 children in Virginia is overweight or obese. Obesity rates have more than tripled among children and adolescents over the past 30 years, making this generation of children the first to have shorter life expectancies than their parents; and, of course, obesity is linked to long-term health problems like heart disease, diabetes, joint problems, and other issues. And though the issue cuts across socio-economic status, research shows that there are direct correlations between growing up poor and being at higher risk of becoming obese. Greater Richmond Fit4Kids is a new nonprofit focused on the issue of preventing childhood obesity by making sure children have easy ways to be physically active and eat nutritious food. Mary Dunne Stewart, Executive Director of Greater Richmond Fit4Kids, will share details about their efforts to bring down childhood obesity levels in our community. In the wake of tragedies like the shooting in Newtown, people debate alternatives to how we care for people living with a mental illness. How we react to these tragedies can either support those living with a mental illness, or further stigmatize and perpetuate negative images of individuals suffering with a mental condition. Unfortunately, there is a lack of awareness about the recovery movement in mental health, and that many of our friends and neighbors are in mental health recovery. VOCAL Virginia is a nonprofit that is comprised of people who are in recovery from a mental health condition, and they help people recognize that a mental health diagnosis does not mean the end, but rather a key to how to move forward with treatment, recover, and be a fully productive member of the community.
