We spend the hour talking with avant-garde jazz pianist Matthew Shipp about his music, his life and the ideas behind the universe of music he has brought into being over the last 30 years. Shipp has recorded more than 50 cds over the years in all kinds of formations and reaching across many musical genres from his free jazz base all the way through electronica and hip-hop.

Exploring this critical topic is essential for determining how exactly we should all treat each other for the purpose of respecting property itself, which is simply a consequence of having the liberty and life to justly acquire, maintain, and improve those portions of the natural world all around us.
Some topics broached are the foreigners scampering across the southern border, the right to travel, trespass, land surveying, the homesteading principle, and the tragedy of the commons.

In honor of the late great, Bill Doggett, Byrd did a tribute on Feb 16, 2013 which would have been Mr. Doggett's 97th birthday.
At the last few minutes of the show, Byrd talked to DJ Harry Duncan who spins at Amoeba Records in Berkeley, CA as part of the Roots and Rhythm Series. Mr. Duncan talks about bringing over legendary Otis Clay to the Amoeba Store in Berkeley.

Listening to the national dialogue on energy policy can be a little discouraging. Not only does it feel like progress is not happening fast enough, it often feels like as a regular person youâre just not going to have any way to influence energy policy. Enter Vote Solar. Vote Solar is a grassroots solar policy advocacy organization that reminds us that all politics is local and that tremendous progress can be made by focusing on local regulatory roadblocks.
Our guest this week on Sea Change Radio is Adam Browning, the executive director of Vote Solar. Driven by a vision of affordable and widespread renewable power, Browning co-founded the organization after a successful campaign in San Francisco for a bond measure that would enable more residents to adopt solar power. While they now have national reach, Vote Solar does not concentrate its efforts on a national front - as Browning likes to say, âIf your plan involves congress, it's a bad plan.â Listen now as Browning describes to host Alex Wise how solar initiatives are being advanced from deep blue California to scarlet Georgia, on the basis of simple economic sense.

Gary Nabhan: The Future of Orchards in Times of Climate Change

Farmers are not debating weather climate change is real or not, they are dealing with it already. At the 2012 Heirloom Seed Expo the co-founder of the local food movement, ethnobotanist and tender of a 6 acre orchard in Arizona, Gary Nabhan, made a wise and moving appeal to value the vast contribution orchards can make to mitigating climate change and resisting the impact of drought and heat.
Gary Nabhan, in 2011, made the Utne reader list of 30 people who made the world a better place to live. As teacher in academia and author of over 25 books, he inspired a new generation to understand the link between bio-diversity and cultural diversity. Many of them now dream of becoming farmers to make a difference with their lives. But few will succeed since land is so hard to find and finance. However there is a bright future in the intriguing task of tending and beginning new orchards on small acreage.
In his 2012 talk Nabhan gave credit to the seed saver movement that he co-founded. At the same time he made an eloquent case for the vitality and resilience of fruit trees and the pleasure of re-discovering long forgotten varieties in abandoned orchards.

Poisoned Flag: Testimony of 2 US Sailors Nuked by Fukushima

Sailors tell a harrowing tale - exposed to radiation from Fukushima, over a period of 2 months, as close as 1 mile from shore. They were not told of the accident until weeks later, were never properly tested for exposure, received no preventative treatment, and even now get no medical help from the Navy. The pair are among more than 100 U.S. sailors suing TEPCO, the Japanese nuclear plant operator.
