This version of the program is divided into 5 segments this week. The show is divided into sections so broadcasters who desire to use this content can insert your station info, etc. The segments vary in length, but I try to keep them approximately 30 minutes in most cases.
Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. All of these influences converge on Out of the Woods to bring you a mix which is as much on the edge as it is down home. Folk music with a rock 'n' roll soul

Cindy chats with San Francisco Black Panther Party member Richard Brown about the case involving torture, institutional laziness, corruption, cruelty, and ineptness and the trial for murder he is involved in, beginning tomorrow in San Francisco. We need to address society's use of Torture as Policy, whether occurring today or 38 years ago in New Orleans, conducted with help from the SF PD. Cindy chats with Kevin Zeese, Executive Director of VotersForPeace.us Kevin was one of the Baucus Eight who were arrestied in a profoundly un-democratic health care hearing before the Senate Finance Committee a few weeks ago. They chat about a whole smörgåsbord of important, timely and very pertinent topics - including torture and disbarring lawyers who wrote the torture policies.

Focus is on the environmental damage and health risks--both of the genetically modified crops themselves and of the potent herbicides that are used to grow them. (Most GMOs are genetically modified IN ORDER to survive exposure to toxic herbicides such as Monsanto's "Roundup.") Includes a prologue by KD and a brief news story about a new GMO labeling bill just introduced in Connecticut.
Human Rights: What Are They, How Do We Exercise Them?

We're back with Episode 14 of the Smells Like Human Spirit Podcast, this time discussing a topic suggested by a listener - human rights. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) presents 30 articles 'as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations' - but many of us have never perused these guidelines with our own eyes. For many in the world, most aspects of this charter are unachievable from birth. For those born in Western countries, increasingly governments are violating the rights - not the 'privileges' - of their populations, with little resistance. Simply put, we all must understand what our rights are in order to exercise, defend, and promote them.

The world has seen its first ever Twitter-hosted wedding. That's right - a Turkish couple made it official by tweeting on their iPads. Whether you find this innovative or just plain depressing, it is clear that social media is playing an ever-increasing role in our lives. Many have serious concerns - modern-day children spend more time using screen media, which includes social media, than participating in any other activity (Rideout, 2005), and authors such as Sherry Turkle have wondered aloud if social networks have made us all feel 'alone together'.
We explored these concerns and dug deeper into the real implications of this new technology with Matteo Wyllyamz (aka Mouselink), a New-York based author, teacher, public speaker and artist. Enjoy!

Why there are pickets outside the Pidgin restaurant

A new high-end restaurant opened in Vancouverâs poorest neighbourhood at the beginning of February. Since it opened its doors, the sidewalk outside the restaurant has been filled with picketers. They say the Pidgin restaurant opened on a fault-line in the battle against gentrification in the downtown eastside and they want it to close. Two of the picketers, Wendy Pedersen and Tami Starlight, discuss the protest with Redeye host Lorraine Chisholm.
