New Executive Director at the Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House- Last November, Irene Jaakson became the new Executive Director of the Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House. Right to Food’s James Kim spoke with Irene and discovered more about her connection to the Downtown Eastside, her initial challenges, and the strategic plan for the Neighbourhood House. Back Alley Urban Farms- In a pen in East Vancouver, there are four hens that are Vancouver-born and raised. These hens are part of Back Alley Urban Farms, and are living proof that localized food production is not only possible, it’s happening in a backyard near you. Right to Food’s John Hughes spoke with Kim Del Valle Garcia and Rowan Melling, the proprietors of Back Alley Urban Farms. Poor People’s Radio- About 80 low income people gathered on Vancouver’s CBC on its annual Food Bank Day to say that they want governments to end the need for food banks by raising welfare rates. Smearing 9/11 Truth; Profitting from Israeli War Crimes

THis installment of the Global Research News Hour contains three features. First, a conversation with Winnipeg based journalist Lesley Hughes. A journalist who ran for the Liberal Party of Canada as one of their star candidates in the 2008 election was turfed and smeared as an anti-semitic conspiracy theorist. First up Franklin Lopez's It's the End of the World as we know it and I feel Fine - interview with anarchist counterfeiter Lucio Urtubia. Then we jump right in to talk about the Zapatistas with Morgan Rogers Gibson who wrote his honors thesis on the Zapatistas and anarchism. We also talk about another anti- state movement from Africa called the Abahlali baseMjondolo Also Wave talked to Rob who is involved in the Frontline Action Against Coal campaign centered around proposed a proposed coal mine in the Leard State Forest in New South Wales. Jonathon Moylan wrote a hoax press release which stated that ANZ were pulling funding from the Whitehaven coal project due to environmental risks the mine will pose. When media reported this without checking share prices for ANZ fell dramatically but generally recovered when the hoax was revealed. Wave also spoke to Catso who organised an action in support of Jonathon Moylan which involved 100s of Out of Order signs being out on ANZ ATMs around the country.

Anarchism in Post-Revolutionary Spain

For many Anarchists, the history of Anti-authoritarian and Anti-capitalist resistance in Spanish serves as a laboratory in which to discuss the successes and failures of that political trajectory in application. The communes, the vibrant difference and debates that existed, and the resistance to the rise of fascism, bourgeious social democracy and statist communism: these are elements that find echoes in struggles prior (such as the Russian Revolution) and since (the struggles in the sixties through to today). This weeks speakers, Ana & Pablo, present a slightly different narrative. By covering a critical (if brief) history of the Anarchism existant from the beginning of the Social Revolution ongoing when Franco's military coup of 1936 was engaged, through the era of dictatorship, through the spectacular democratization of Spain in the 1970's and into today, the speakers propose that the strongest that Anarchist movements have been was during periods of critical heterodoxy and debate within, as well as mutual aid and support in the face of restistance. This show, due to it's length, is split into two episodes. The first aired 2013-02-03. Following interviews, there's about 20 minutes of metal tracks from Usnea and others!
