In Luke O'Donovan's Defense

On the night of New Years Eve this year, there was an incident of violence that occurred at a party which left six people stabbed and/or beaten in the Reynoldstown neighborhood of Atlanta. One man, Luke O'Donovan, was taken to the hospital with multiple bruises and also stab wounds on his back, was arrested. The police and media narrative, based on the words of those present at the party, states that Luke left the party angry, returned with a knife and, as we've seen portrayed in recent coverage of mass shootings in the U.S., returned to attack those who enraged him.
The Support Luke Defense Committee and Atlanta Anarchist Black Cross, however, have been working to change that narrative. Friends, families and Allies of Luke claim that Luke was actually the target of a homophobic attack by a group of young men, and succeeded in defending himself and maybe saved his own life before police came. This week, we speak with Esme of the SLDC about Luke and Luke's case, and how folks can support him.

"Kill Anything That Moves" - Uncovering War Crimes in Vietnam, with Author Nick Turse

In June 2001, Nick Turse was a graduate student researching post-traumatic stress disorder among Vietnam veterans at the U.S. National Archives when an archivist asked him if witnessing war crimes could cause PTSD. And would he like to see some papers? So began a ten-year investigation of U.S. war crimes committed during the war in Vietnam â crimes the Pentagon investigated and substantiated, and then covered up. Nick Turse's research led him from the National Archives to the homes of U.S. veterans and of Vietnamese survivors. The declassified documents and the interviews he collected suggest that war crimes like My Lai were not isolated incidents, but were both pervasive and systemic, causing the deaths of perhaps millions of Vietnamese civilians.

Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith.
