FCC Policies Failing to Address Race and Gender Inequality in Media Ownership

The FCC has repeatedly failed to address the impact of its policies on ownership of broadcast media by women and people of color, says Joe Torres of Free Press. A proposed rule change would deepen media inequality by encouraging the concentration of media into fewer and fewer hands. The latest rule change is only the latest foray in a historic struggle for control that ensues each time a new media technology emerges, beginning with the invention of the printing press and telegraph. The newest iteration of this battle is control of the Internet, as powerful Internet providers like Verizon claim the right to control the information streaming over their fiber-optic cables. Mr. Torres describes a U.S. media policy that has historically turned over control to what he calls âcorporate gatekeepersâ.

FCC Vote Expected to Further Erode Independent & Local News Coverage (Dec. 8, 2012)

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will soon vote on new rules allowing companies to further monopolize media outlets in the communities they serve,. Critics are calling the impending vote a sort of Christmas present for Rupert Murdoch, who reportedly hopes to add the Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune to his U.S. media empire.
As a handful of media conglomerates proceed to gobble up independent broadcasters and newspapers nationwide, the resulting hollowing-out of the newsroom has in turn produced âa dumbed-down civic dialogueâ to the point where self-government may become impossible, says former FCC Commisioner Michael Copps. In his view, the government shares responsibility for this state of affairs, âbecause the FCC seldom met a merger that it didnât like.â He also blames the "evisceration of public interest guidelines that broadcasters used to have to observe . . . to serve the public interest and maintain competition, localism and diversity.â In this interview he makes the case for a progressive media reform policy.
With Michael Copps, former FCC Commissioner who retired from the agency at the end of last year. Mr. Copps is now Senior Advisor for the Media and Democracy Reform Initiative at Common Cause.

Palestinian National Movement Gains Momentum with UN Vote (Dec. 1, 2012)

The United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly on November 29th to grant Palestine non-member observer state status to Palestinians at the United Nations. The vote was taken on the 65th anniversary of the UN vote to divide the former British Mandate of Palestine into two states, Israel and Palestine. In retaliation, Israel on Friday announced the construction of 3,000 new settlements in the Palestinian territories it occupied in 1967. The UN bid "will only be meaningful to the extent that it launches the Palestinians on a trajectory away from continued negotiations with Israel in the framework of the Oslo agreements and toward an entirely different trajectory which is reestablishing UN resolutions, international law and international legitimacy as the framework to deal with and to resolve the question of Palestine," says Middle East analyst Mouin Rabbani.
With Mouin Rabbani, co-editor of Jadaliyya, an independent ezine published by the Arab Studies Institute and formerly senior analyst of the Middle East with the International Crisis Group.
