Live from Gaza City with Dr. Mads Gilbert (Nov 24, 2012)

We interviewed Dr. Mads Gilbert live from Gaza City just after the end of Israelâs week-long assault on Gaza, where he describes the humanitarian catastrophe after five years of siege and two devastating military attacks in four years. Gilbert is a medical doctor, and passionate advocate on behalf of the Palestinian people. He is also professor of medicine at the University of North Norway, where he specializes in anesthesiology and emergency medicine.
Gilbert says that 60 percent of Gazaâs 1.7 million people are under 18 years old. Because of the blockade, water and sewage pipes remain unrepaired after the last Israeli assault, causing 90 percent of the water to be undrinkable. Shortages and widespread unemployment mean that children suffer from widespread malnutrition and chronic anemia, causing stunting of growth and limiting brain development. Gilbert describes Gaza as âthe worldâs largest child prison.â

Dr. Gilbert was one of the only foreign doctors in Gaza during Israelâs last three-week assault in 2008-2009, working at Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, and co-authored a book of that experience with colleague and fellow witness and physician Erik Fosse, called âEyes in Gaza.â Last April he was interviewed by the news website Mondoweiss, where he reported that Gaza remained in ruins under the Israeli blockade three years after that assault, and that Israeli air strikes continue to kill civilians. On the fourth day of Israel bombardment of Gaza, Palestinian political scientist Leila Farsakh interpreted Israeli and Palestinian actions in the context of domestic and regional goals, as well as media coverage that largely justified Israel's latest attack on a largely defenseless population. Code-named Operation Pillar of Defense, the Israeli offensive took place almost exactly four years after Operation Cast Lead, Israel's three-week assault on Gaza by Israeli sea, land, and air forces which left over 1,300 Palestinians dead and displaced as many as 90,000 people, causing a major humanitarian crisis.

Unionize McDonalds, Burger Kings, KFC, Taco Bell, Piazza Hut, Papa John's, Dominos, Wendy's Say Their Striking Workers In First Ever Fast Food Walk-Out
Hundreds of workers in an organizing campaign, Fast Food Forward, struck New York City's largest fast food chains to call for decent wages to support their families, and the right to form a union without interference. Fast Food jobs have accounted for the bulk of new jobs added since the recession and are some of the lowest paid in the country. In New York City, many workers report earning the state's minimum wage, $7.25, and getting shifts totaling an average of only 24 hours a week forcing them to rely on public assistance programs to get healthcare and provide for their families. Now, workers across the US, like those at Walmart, McDonald's, Macy's, LAX, JFK airports, NYC car washes and other retail and fast food stores are joining together to demand decent pay, despite facing retaliation and suspension for trying to form a union.

She has written about the dangers of nuclear energy and radioactive waste like radioactive hydrogen (tritium) and advocated for the closure of nuclear power plants and uranium facilities. She was active in the civil rights work before focusing on nuclear power.

Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith. Poor Peoples' Radio: Justice Not Charity

Poor Peoples' Radio took place out front of the annual CBC Food Bank fundraiser open house, December 7th, 2012.
In 1982 the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society was established as a temporary social service. Now 30 years, later it has become a permanent institution to help feed many of the hungry people in BC.
At this time of year many organizations and media networks run appeals asking the public to help those in poverty with donations of money, food, and other presents. The people of BC do give generously at this time of year.
However, no matter how generous the public is, charity cannot eradicate poverty. The season of giving will end in a month or so but the poverty continues all year round. In addition, forcing people to rely on charity can be humiliating. It is impossible to eat a healthy diet on welfare. People deserve Justice rather than Charity.
After 30 years of Food Banks and nearly a decade of BC being one of the worst provinces in the Canada for poverty, isnât it time to ask questions about why is there so much poverty.
Rather than the media simply raising support for charity, shouldnât there be a provincial dialogue on the harm that poverty does to the people of BC, the waste of human lives and billions of dollars in costs?
BC needs the government to show 10% of the compassion of the public and take action to raise welfare and the other steps necessary to tackle poverty.
Raise the Rates is encouraging all the media to launch a dialogue on âWhat would be needed to make Food Banks unnecessary in BC by January 12, 2018?â
As a start of that dialogue Raise the Rates will be hosting a Poor Peopleâs Radio between noon and 1 pm on Friday December 7, outside the CBC at 700 Hamilton Street, Vancouver.
