This Week in Palestine: Bedouins in the Negev with Professor Oren Yifchatel, Host John Roberts

The November 17th edition explores the plight of the Negev Palestinian Bedouins with commentary by Prof. Oren Yifchatel, who teaches political geography, urban planning and public policy at Ben Gurion University in Beersheba.In a series of books and articles, Yiftachel conceptualizes the Israeli regime as an ethnocracy, promoting a dominant project of ethnicization throughout Israel/Palestine. He documents the various practices of this project, and the manner in which it has constructed ethno-class identities and stratified citizenship through the process of expansion, development and politicization in the different regions of Israel/Palestine. A major focus of his work has been the Zionist-Palestinian dialectic, and the evolution of Zionist 'colonialism,' Palestinian resistance and counter mobilization. His work has also focused on other marginalized ethno-classes such as the Mizrahim (Eastern Jews), âRussianâ Israelis, Orthodox Jews, the Druze and the Bedouins. Regarding the Bedouin communities, the Israeli government classifies approximately 40 villages in the Negev, including al-Araqib, as unrecognized, arguing that the 53,000 Palestinian Bedouins living there cannot prove land ownership. The Bedouin communities say the land is their ancestral home. After the 1948 war, Israel ordered Palestinian Bedouins in the Negev from their villages, and declared them state land. The village of Al-Araqib has been demolished fourty-three times by Israeli forces, and Palestinian Bedouins in the Negev face a continual struggle to preserve their land, culture, and way of life.

John has authored six books, including Elements of Refusal, Running on Emptiness and, most recently, Future Primitive Revisited (2012, Feral House). Some of his writings have been recently compiled into Origins: A John Zerzan Reader (2010, FC Press jointly with Black and Green Press). His radio show airs every Tuesday at 7pm PST on 88.1 FM on KWVA radio out of U of O in Eugene, Oregon.
This week we talk about Mr. Zerzan's critiques of Civilization, Domestication, Symbolic Culture, ecological destruction, Patriarchy and other topics.

Walmart faced not only a throng of shoppers on Black Friday but what a union-backed group, Organization for Respect at Walmart, ("Our Walmart") said was the biggest wave of protests that the retailer had ever seen; 1,000 stores had demonstrations in 46 states, ranging from a few community supporters asking to talk with store managers about raising wages to raucous demonstrations in California, New Jersey and Washington that each attracted hundreds of people. "In its 50-year history, Wal-Mart has never seen strikes like those we're seeing today," said Lynsey Kryzwick, a spokeswoman for OUR Walmart, which works closely with the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union. "It will be hard for Wal-Mart to ignore all these workers and their allies calling for change at Wal-Mart from improving the low wages and unfair working conditions to fighting retaliation. Our Walmart, has filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board, saying that Wal-Mart had violated federal laws against intimidating workers who seek to strike or otherwise protest by saying there could be consequences in the form of dismissals, demotions or reduction in work hours.

Out of the Woods is an earthy, wires and wood, mostly acoustic program featuring some of the best new and established artists from the worlds of folk, bluegrass, singer-songwriters, alt.country, Americana, classic country, old-time, Celtic, and everything that falls in between. The show is an unpredictable mix flowing like a river between moods, often with an edge or in a melancholy minor key. On occasion, Out of the Woods features interviews and live in-studio performances with national and international touring musicians. Past guests have included artists such as Bela Fleck, Si Kahn, Brown Bird, Dana Robinson, Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen, Bill Bourne, Karl Shiflett, Rachel Bissex, Darryl Purpose, Bow Thayer, Cosy Sheridan and many others. Out of the Woods grew out of Jon 'Chip' Colcord's former acoustic programs, The Song Swap and Music For The Mountain, separate folk and bluegrass programs which aired in New Hampshire during the 1990s. As a child, Colcord grew up a ravenous music fan with an ear for both rock and folk, from Arlo Guthrie to Aerosmith.
