The Middle East, and much of the globe have been caught up over the period from November 14 to November 21 in the violent exchanges between Gaza and Israel. The lion's share of the civilian casualties have been within Gaza. With at least 1,500 military strikes by Israel and more than 1000 rockets fired by Gaza into Israel, this is the greatest carnage generated in this generations long conflict since Israel's Operation Cast Lead in 2008.
Israel and its partners on the international stage are saying the attacks were instigated by Gaza 'terrorists.' Hamas, the governing authority in Gaza is calling it retaliation against Israeli aggression.
A ceasefire agreement, brokered by the Egyptian president went into effect on the evening of November 21. Twenty four hours later, it seems to be holding. Is this a permanent situation?
In this special edition of the Global Research News Hour, we probe the recent outbreak of violence, why it's happening now, what the realities are behind the media spin, and where the current situation sits as part of a broader regional and global power play.

Introduced by Consul General Jesus Rodiguez, Steve Brouwer speaks about the Venezuelan health care system and the program to bring primary health care to all previously denied it due to their poverty. From his experience in researching his recent book on the topic he relates the successes and the obstacles to fully implement "Mission Al Dentro". The foundation of the unique model rests on the Cuban governments program to train doctors who are committed to working in community where ever they are needed. Medical education is free and Cuba has 80,000 doctors. Cuba and Venezuela together have 72,000 students in medical school. This exceeds the number of US students studying to become doctors. Additionally, without the burden of debt that the US system imposes, the new doctors will be free to follow their humanitarian inclinations instead of being channeled by their educational debt burden into a US like system of rationing health care to those who can pay.

Ms. Clark joined us to speak about Climate Change with regards to development. We discussed the challenges of tackling long-term issues within short-term political cycles, multi-sectorial approaches to addressing climate change, and mechanisms for low carbon development in developing nations, among other topics.
Weâre also joined by Matt Chalmers. He is a recent Stanford graduate and current J.D. student at U.C. Davis who firmly believes that many of the great challenges of our time must be met with interdisciplinary solutions. In his time at Stanford, Matt wedded a strong background in the physical sciences to the study of the complex social, financial, and policy obstacles to progress on climate change posed by the political and economic structure of our world today.
