Grand Jury Resistance in PNW / Mountain Top Removal in West VA

Sept. 7, 2012, 5:31 p.m.
This week's show features a conversation with Will Potter about political repression against accused Anarchists in the Pacific Northwest. Later, we'll speak with Bryan of Katuah Earth First! about his participation in a recent action in West Virginia against Mountain Top Removal. Our first segment of this weeks show is a conversation with Will Potter, award-winning journalist, author and blogger at www.greenisthenewred.com about the JTTF & FBI raids on suspected Anarchists in the Pacific Northwest and the series of Grand Juries now being convened around participation in the May 1st protests in Seattle of this year. Also, we'll be speaking with Bryan, a member of Katuah Earth First!, based out of Asheville. Bryan was arrested on July 28th during a non-violent direct action under the banner of Radical Action for Mountain People's Survival (RAMPS). This action briefly shut down and brought attention to the Mountain Top Removal style of strip mining being used at the Hobet mine, operated by Patriot Coal in Lincoln County, West Virginia. We talk about the Katuah bioregion, Fracking in North Carolina and getting involved to save our landbase. as re: Grand Jury Resistance: Green Is The New Red Pacific Northwest Grand Jury Resistance Donate to Committee Against Political Repression as re: Mountain Top Removal RAMPS Campaign Katuah Earth First! Earth First! FBI Raids on Almighty Latin Kings and Queens Nation in NC

Sept. 7, 2012, 5:13 p.m.
This weeks interview is with Sara Lee of the Greensboro support group for Almighty Latin Kings and Queens Nation in North Carolina. During the hour, Sara Lee talks about the history of the ALKQ Nation and it's development in North Carolina, including being fundamental to the drawing together of Crips, Bloods, MS13 and community and faith groups in Greensboro in 2008 to draft a gang truce and common statement of the necessity for organizations of all stripes to focus on community enrichment and safety. On Tuesday of last week (December 6th) at 8AM, an elite FBI SWAT team, the ATF & the Greensboro-FBI committed synchronized and violent raids on houses and families allegedly aligned with the ALKQ Nation here in NC, rounding up 13 people and harassing their families for 3 to 4 hours. Anarchists, like Sara Lee, are calling for support for the ALKQN defendants who they've worked with on anti-prison struggles here in state. The defense network is made up of family, friends, allies and anarchist comrades. The arrested current and former members of the ALKQN organization in state are being indicted by a Federal Grand Jury on Racketeering and RICO charges. More information on the case (as well as a link for donations for legal costs) can be found at http://alkqnsupport.com/

#236 -- Corporate Plunder & Popular Revolt (Part 1)

Sept. 7, 2012, 4:23 p.m.
Journalist CHRIS HEDGES traces the rise of the Corporate State, the destruction of democracy, and the corporate plunder of society. And he surveys successful examples of nonviolent popular rebellion. This week he discusses how corporations subverted democracy in the US since 1914. And he takes us to some of America's "sacrifice zones"--areas devastated by unrestrained corporate plunder. He concludes with a scathing critique of the Democratic Party for selling out the people to the corporations.

Word Nerd

Sept. 7, 2012, 6:19 a.m.
" I am a word nerd. I like to look up words in my American Heritage Dictionary, see the words for the definitions, what the earlier forms of the word were, and the other words to which a words is related. The dictionary has the heft and thin, crinkly pages of a Wisdom Book, but like all Wisdom Books it was written by humans, most of them white males, so when deep wisdom seems to rise out of it, you’re really pulling the wisdom from your own experience. ... Chris Mooney: Inside The Republican Brain and Climate Denialism (re-broadcast)

Sept. 6, 2012, 10:18 a.m.
If you’re listening to this show, chances are you believe that climate change is real, that it’s a problem, and that human actions have brought us to where we are today. Some Sea Change Radio listeners are Democrats, some are Republicans, and a large number may not identify with either party – but all are probably pretty concerned about responsible environmental stewardship, irrespective of their specific political party affiliation. There is one political party here in the United States, however, whose official position is to deny the threat of climate change and block any and all attempts to slow environmental degradation, in spite of the large body of scientific research that contradicts that position. Our guest this week on Sea Change Radio is Chris Mooney, whose book The Republican Brain: The Science of Why They Deny Science — and Reality explores why so many Republicans refuse to accept things that most experts identify as factual. Mooney talks with host Alex Wise about the book, what he posits, and the research that backs him up.
