They say that opinions are like assholes, and everybody's got one-- well, tonight's got more bloated sphincters than the slideshow at a proctologists' convention! It's the "Preachy Assholes" show, featuring a numbing parade of opinionated asswipes who rave on and on about things that inflamed their rant gland. We'll explore:
Burned-out teevee actors who recorded mawkish pseudo-patriotic/family/ religious shit! The bizarre and numerous rabidly pro-American CANADIAN loons and their immensive body of works--all of them involving the Ur- rant, Canadian Gordon Sinclair's "The Americans"! Skillful parodies of classic opinionated-asshole rants! Hell, even *I* got inspired to do my own foam-flecked, crazy-eyed manifesto of what it means to be an American!
NOTE: I like to fix up the vinyl when I do a show, but these poor records have been through the mill--many of them were abused 45s, and the albums look like they were owned by bitter drunks. (I can tell by the wear.) I spent hours working on the Gabe Kaplan piece alone--then I realized, Screw it. This stuff is meant to be painful--heck, i should put MOAR SKIPS in it!

The Manitoba government is building new hydroelectricity projects on First Nations territories. The government has promised to conduct fair consultations and involve First Nations as partners. Some communities have concerns with the consultation process. The Tataskweyak Cree Nation at Split Lake has launched an awareness campaign around issues related to the proposed Keeyask dam in Northern Manitoba.

Firstly, Ethan Watters on socially defined aspects of madness, including how Glaxo Smith Kline aggressively globalized Western ideas of depression in Japan. Next, I summarize Steve Talbott's essay on problems of the 'man as machine' metaphor. Finally, an hour on Peace Pilgrim, whose 'retirement project' was to walk across USA for over 25 years without using money or asking for food or shelter.

I start my third year this week with an unusually open ended love-it-or-hate-it next episode in the 'Flight From Meaning' series, centered on an essay by philosopher Steve Talbott on how biologists contrive to study life itself as if it were merely a lifeless mechanism. We also hear from Jane Goodall about chimpanzee society and read some of Underground History of American Education on John Taylor Gatto's boyhood.

First, a regular speaker, Alfie Kohn, speaking on why he believes that any competition is too much. We conclude with the end of chapter 9 of David Graeber's Debt, The First 5000 Years, on the introduction of coinage in India, Greece and China.

Are you looking for a way to help the local environment? If so, come on out and be a Nature Helper! The Guelph Nature Helpers meet a couple times each month to tackle an environmental project in the Guelph area. Projects may include invasive plant removal, tree planting/maintenance, garbage/litter clean-up and assisting with community gardening.
Our next gathering is July 28 when we will be removing buckthorn from the site of The Plant an Old Growth Forest Project at the Ignatius Jesuit Centre. If you have snips or hand saws, please bring them along but we will provide tools if you donât have your own. We will meet at 10 am at the entrance to the Ignatius Centre property on Cox Creek Boulevard. Look for the Nature Helpers sign.
Other upcoming gathering dates are August 11 and August 25.
