The Hands That Feed Us:
Workers of the Food Chain Unite, Demonstrate and March
Workers and supporters of The Coalition of Immokalee Workers Campaign for Fair Food at Chipotle and the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United s Dignity at Darden Campaign met at the Capital Grille restaurant on E. 42nd Street in NYC and then marched to a nearby Chipotle Restaurant for a boisterous joint demonstration against exploitation by these two large chain restaurants. Joining the protest were members of Local 1500, UFCW, the Brandworkers' Flaum Appetizing campaign and Hot and Crusty Bakery workers, all celebrating organizing victories. The demonstration was the kick off to a daylong conference by 14 unions and workers centers throughout the country constituting the Food Chain Workers Alliance which is organizing the close to 20 million workers throughout the U.S. in the food system - on farms and in food processing and meatpacking plants, warehouses, grocery stores, restaurants and food service establishments.

At a time of decline for traditional labor organizations, Ai-jen Poo from the National Domestic Workers Alliance describes the growth and successes of domestic workers organizing in NYS and around the country. They have recently joined in an alliance, the Excluded Workers Congress, with other immigrant based worker movements, many taking the form of workers centers, representing national alliances of workers in restaurants, day labor, taxi, formerly incarcerated workers, guest workers & farmworkers. This is a rare hopeful moment for workers too long excluded from labor law protections who need more support from the union movement that in turn needs their vitality and innovative approaches to organizing.

THE NEW JIM CROW
Racial profiling was chosen as the target of this yearâs âFatherâs Day Silent Marchâ [ silentmarchnyc.org ] to end âstop and frisk,â a discriminatory New York police practice that nets more than a half million black and Latino youth each year - and is vigorously defended by Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
But New York is not the only place where the criminal justice system relentlessly targets people of color for disproportionate surveillance, arrest, and incarceration. In California, prison construction has expanded at record levels to incarcerate a rapidly growing proportion of blacks, Latinos, and others of color.
According to Ohio State University law professor MICHELLE ALEXANDER, this is no accident, but part of a racist and caste-based system of social control operating throughout the United States. Alexander refers to this in her new book as âThe New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness.â
Alexander recently spoke in Dominguez Hills, Calif. about the re-insitutionalizing of the âJim Crowâ syndrome, courtesy of Global Voices for Justice [ gvfj.org ].

Psychology researcher and educational theorist ALFIE KOHN is in fine form in this vintage talk (ca. 1989). Kohn says that the problem with our culture is not that it is "too competitive." Rather, the scientific research shows that ALL competition is harmful and counterproductive. It leads away from excellence, not towards it. And it's bad for the soul.
So why is competition emphasized in America? Kohn (briefly) discusses how it reinforces existing structures of power in our society.

Inquest into death of Michael Vann Hubbard

In 2009, Vancouver police shot and killed a man staying at a homeless shelter. The inquest into his death heard that he was killed by a police officer who did not have adequate training in dealing with people with mental health issues. Douglas King represented Michael Vann Hubbard's family at the inquest.
