Condo development threatens Musqueam burial site

A 4000-year-old Musqueam village site and burial ground at what is now the 1300 block of South West Marine Drive is at the centre of a fight between the City of Vancouver, the provincial government and Century Holdings Ltd. Cecelia Point is a Musqueam community spokesperson. She explains why the Musqueam First Nation took the step of blockading the Arthur Laing Bridge to the airport in May.
Fighting the abuses of Canadian mining companies: Chief Marilyn Baptiste

Last weekend the Council of Canadians organized a two-day conference to expose the environmental and human rights abuses of Canadian mining companies. This is the second of three podcasts featuring speakers from this conference.
In the afternoon of June 1, indigenous people from communities affected by mines throughout the Americas joined the Xeni Gwet'in First Nation outside Vancouverâs Terminal City Club in a show of solidarity against the proposed New Prosperity mine west of Williams Lake. Inside the club, New Prosperity developer Taseko Mines was holding its annual general meeting. Marilyn Baptiste is chief of the Xeni Gwet'in First Nation.
The conference was dedicated to the memory of anti-mining activist Bernardo Vasquez Sanchez who was murdered in San Jose de Progreso, Mexico in March of this year.

Mark Weisbrot on Eurozone Crisis

Weisbrot, recently in Spain, examines Eurozone crisis and how it is being taken advantage of by the European Central Bank to crush the unions and roll back long standing health and welfare benefits and the popular resistance to it. He points out that remedies that could ameliorate crisis such as the stimulus package used in the US would be more effective than pushing austerity but that is not the way the ECB, IMF and EU âtroikaâ want it. He notes that the crisis has had a negative effect on US economy since sales to Europe have fallen and that if it gets worse it can impact the US presidential election

Last weekend the Council of Canadians organized a two-day conference to expose the environmental and human rights abuses of Canadian mining companies. Our next three podcasts will feature speakers from this conference.
Maude Barlow is National Chairperson of the Council of Canadians. Last September, Maude Barlow travelled to Guatemala to bear witness to the struggles of communities fighting to preserve their environment and protect their health against destructive Canadian mining projects.

Battle Fatigue Over Army Green

The U.S. military is far and away the largest consumer of fossil fuels in this country. Reducing the militaryâs carbon footprint is not only important for the environment, it also would make for a much more effective, efficient military. But efforts to make the military greener are being stymied by Republicans and a few conservative Democrats in Congress. This week on Sea Change Radio, host Alex Wise speaks with David Roberts, a staff writer at Grist.org, and one of the leading environmental journalists in the country, about the current political struggle to enable the U.S. military to use alternative fuels and take other steps to reduce its carbon consumption. Roberts, whoâs written a series of pieces on the subject, takes us inside the Marine Corpâs Expeditionary Energy Office and tries to wade through the political morass thatâs keeping these forward-thinking efforts from becoming standard operating procedure.

At the same time, government uses austerity to justify cuts to health care, pensions, culture, food safety and environmental research and reviews. Ellen Judd and Sandra Gessler, members of Peace Alliance Winnipeg, talk about military spending, the austerity budget, and Canadian military missions in Afghanistan and Haiti.

This segment begins with a news clip from Utah, January 2012. The Downwinders are meeting for the first Day of Remembrance and mourn the many who died of fallout from bombs exploded at the Nevada Test Site. They are the sick and dying proof of the dangers of radiation.
Dr. John Gofman was one of the prominent whistle blowers of the nuclear age. In 1970 he was one of the first to warn of the danger, and call for the shut-down, of all nuclear power plants. Gofman came from the Manhattan Project, worked on the effects of radiation at Lawrence Livermore Lab and concluded that power plants are killers. He is the 1992 recipient of the Right Livelihood Award. He is often called the "father" of the anti-nuclear movement. Gofman died in 2007.

Local housing activists say that it will have a disastrous effect on the last low-income neighbourhood in the city.
