The Quebec Student Strike
June 10, 2012, 2:19 p.m.
radioKEBELE spoke with Aaron Lakoff, from Montreal's McGill University radio station CKUT, about the student strike. We found out more about previous student strikes Quebec and what's going on now. It's a great background to the strike, and very informative - some good nuggets of wisdom and inspiration!
Since this interview we have seen the arrest of over 700 protesters opposed to the tuition hike, the Quebec government's allegedly unconstitutional Bill 78 that limits the right to protest and Plan Nord (the provincial government's "develop"/destroy the northern Quebec by exploiting the natural resources there).
For more information and regular updates about the strike check out ckut.ca and http://montreal.mediacoop.ca/
* The government of Quebec plans to allow university tuition to increase by $1625 over five years. In case you're wondering, $1 Canadian dollar is worth about £0.62 GBP - yes, we're getting screwed!

#588 - Hold On To Your Kids
June 10, 2012, 9:17 a.m.
Gabor Maté has advice for parents and anyone seeking to understand the youth of today - on the problems for kids who focus their attention on their peers instead of their parents. Like Alfie Kohn, he urges parents to eschew behavioral methods and instead to value long term relationships with their kids. We supplement his analysis with a radio adaptation of the film Starsuckers, on how the cult of celebrity is exploited for financial gain and political purposes
BSTF 917 - Orson Scott Card's SECULAR HUMANIST REVIVAL MEETING
June 10, 2012, 8:29 a.m.
[NOTE: When I originally did this show, I had no idea that the guy was busting such asshat moves in the xtian homophobic kook circles--but the content of this science-vs-religion sermon stands far and away from that bullshittery. ]
I found this tape while I was looking for a lost disc, and was I ever happy! Orson Scott Card (yep, THAT guy!) delivered these powerhouse sermons at SF Cons in the '80s, and they were a rapturous joy for the thinking man. Having heard that Secular Humanism was a religion, he thought there might be room for a secular humanist evangelist, so he wrote his SECULAR HUMANIST REVIVAL MEETING and began putting on performances. Styled on old tent revivals, Card took them a step further, arguing for logic and reason within the concept of religion that reconciles them both. All I can say is HALLEFUCKINGLUJAH!
True, the first side of the tape was a bit hinky after 25 years. I fixed it where I could, but I wouldn't recommend headphones. Still, this man's ideas ring so true and real that it's worth bearing with a little truly minor mushiness here and there in the first half. The last side of the cassette was nice and crisp.

Obama's Secrets, Leaks & Surveillance
June 9, 2012, 6:15 p.m.
In recent weeks the press has published harrowing details about the Obama Administration's drone and cyber-warfare campaigns, including President Obama's personal selection of suspected terrorists for inclusion in a CIA kill list. Outraged members of the U.S. Senate are now calling for hearings - not to investigate the exponential growth of an assassination program by an increasingly unaccountable executive branch, but to find and punish the leakers.
With Thomas Drake, a former senior executive at the National Security Agency and whistleblower who was prosecuted by the Obama Administration under the 1917 Espionage Act.
Radio interview by Amy Grunder, first aired live on "Sounds of Dissent" on WZBC 90.3 FM Boston on 2012-06-09.

Governments' Internet worms Flame & Stuxnet spy and destroy
June 9, 2012, 4:37 p.m.
Internet worms Flame & Stuxnet were almost certainly developed by governments; likely Israel and/or the U.S.
- The Flame worm/Trojan/backdoor, a type of malware and spyware, was directed primarily at computers in the Middle East, and sent pilfered data and contacts back to its creators. Probably created around 2007, Flame spread to computers by posing as Microsoft Updates and forging Microsoft digital certificates.

Obama's Terror Tuesdays
June 9, 2012, 3:59 p.m.
Judge, jury and executioner - Every Tuesday, President Obama gathers with two dozen security officials in the White House Situation Room to nominate candidates for assassination by unmanned drones. The list includes Americans. Nothing like this program has existed before. And almost no one is challenging it.
With Karen Greenberg, director of the Center on National Security at Fordham University's School of Law, and Pardiss Kebriaei, staff attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights.
Radio interview by Amy Grunder, first aired live on "Sounds of Dissent" on WZBC 90.3 FM Boston on 2012-06-02.

COVERT SYRIAN INTERVENTION
Chaos, killings and confusion are escalating in Syria, with unreliable and selective international reporting about victims, perpetrators and instigators. The Security Council is debating more sanctions and military intervention⦠as in Libya, where UN approval of NATO, French and American attacks resulted in a fragmented nation now controlled by oil brokers, racist rebels and undisciplined militias.
ELAINE HAGOPIAN, a Syrian-American professor emeritus of sociology at Simmons College, and Arabic Hour TV host [arabichour.org ], discusses Syriaâs complexities, including: intervention by âthird partiesâ such as Al Qaeda, Libyan mercenaries, and regional Islamists, the sidelining of Syriaâs nonviolent reform movement, prospects for the Assad regime, the Annan plan, Russian and Iranian mediation, and the covert unleashing of religious, cultural and tribal antagonisms that may yet spread well beyond Damascus.
