New Yorkers Rally To Oppose Racially Biased, Illegal And Costly Marijuana
Arrests And Stop-And-Frisk Practices Of Mayor Bloomberg's NYPD!
Mayor Bloomberg, now presides over
the largest initiative in the country to arrest young men of color on false marijuana possession charges - an outcome of the controversial stop-and-frisk practices conducted by NYPD. Evoking Charles Dickens' famous novel, protestors declared that biased policing practices under Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Kelly were creating "A Tale of Two Cities". One is for white residents where marijuana possession was decriminalized in 1977, where they are seldom stopped and frisked, and mothers do not fear that their children will be unlawfully rounded up by the police. The other New York is for the hundreds of thousands of people of color who are stopped even though the overwhelming majority of them are innocent of any wrongdoing; tens of thousands are illegally searched, falsely charged, arrested and incarcerated for marijuana possession (even though it's not a crime in New York); and mothers live in fear of the police unlawfully snatching their children off the streets. Underscoring the two city theme at the end of the rally, about a dozen young white people blocked the entrance to NYPD headquarters exposing themselves to arrest by police as they denounced the racially biased police practices - the police refused to arrest them!

R.I.P.: RAY BRADBURY
Speculative fiction author RAY BRADBURY died this week in Los Angeles, after a lengthy illness. He is notable, among many other works, for "The Martian Chronicles," "The Illustrated Man," and a novel originally called "The Fireman" -- later known as the seminal freedom of thought novel, "Fahrenheit 451."
Bradbury spoke of his life and work in a conversation with LAWRENCE BRIDGES for the National Endowment for the Arts.

R.I.P.: STEVE BEN-ISRAEL
Legendary actor, poet, composer, philosopher and performance artist STEVE BEN-ISRAEL this week succumbed to a long illness at his NYC home. An alumnus of the Living Theatre, Ben-Israel had been a beatnik, anarchist, freedom fighter, justice seeker, hip-hopper, hippie, yippie, and performer -- most recently of his nationally-toured performance piece, "Nonviolent Executions." We spoke with Ben-Israel on WBAI's "Earthwatch" upon the death of another cultural legend, poet and composer Tuli Kupferberg of the Fugs. Much of Steve's artistically and historically-revealing praise for Kupferberg could just as well be applied to himself.

Some have suggested that Black music is America's only cultural contribution to the world. Certainly, not all artists have received the recognition they deserve. Now, Norman Otis Richmond discusses his letter to President Obama, "What about We People who are Darker than Blue?"
Robin Philpot gives the latest on Quebec. "People are tired of the business-as-usual approach to politics." Even lawyers are demonstrating - 500 of them. Quebec's anti-protest law isn't "draconian" in scare-quotes, it IS draconian. Philpot discusses the "control of information" preventing the rest of Canada from understanding how profound the demonstrations are. He also reports on a 2-hour video released of Quebec's 1%.
David Jacobs followed the Charles Taylor trial. Taylor was not actually found guilty of many accusations directed against him. Very little, meanwhile, is said about the considerable human rights violations by his opponents. At the same time, the "international" prosecutors are mainly Americans, three-quarters of whom are U.S. military.
