Extradition Watch: Richard's Story

On 29th March 2012 Liberty, hosted a public meeting at Sheffield Hallam University on the subject of the threatened extradiction of Richard O'Dywer. Richard is facing extradition to the USA because he ran a web site on a .net domain on a server in Sweden which had hyperlinks to copyrighted material elsewhere -- something that is not a crime in the UK.

Gondola proposed for Squamish park

Stawamus Chief Provincial Park protects the world-famous granite cliffs just outside Squamish, B.C. Sea to Sky Corporation is applying to remove land from this Class A park to build a gondola to carry people from the valley floor to the summit. Gwen Barlee worries that this project could be the thin edge of the wedge in a park system that is already severely underfunded.

Persistent Organic Pollutants Exposure Minimization, A Consensus Building Conference

Scientific knowledge supports the conclusion that the contamination of the global environment with persistent organic pollutants (POPs) is causing significant damages to human health around the world. This knowledge serves as a basis for public educational outreach focusing upon POPs exposure minimization. In the 2010 World Health Organization report, âPersistent Organic Pollutants: Impact on Child Healthâ, the recommendation is made that health arena leaders take action to minimize the exposure that children receive to POPs.
On March 28, 2012, Cancer Action NY hosted a conference on the subject of POPs exposure minimization. David O. Carpenter, MD, Director of the State University of New York at Albany, Institute for Health and the Environment presented a brief overview of the WHO report named above. This presentation was followed by a discussion of strategies for accomplishing POPs exposure minimization. Much of the discussion centered upon motivating the United States government to take the steps necessary to insure that the corporations which used and disposed of PCBs are required to take further actions that would reduce the harm caused by their past actions. It was agreed that a joint effort should be made to educate the residents of the Akwesasne reserve on the subject of POPs exposure minimization. Akwesasne is downwind and downstream on the St. Lawrence River from industrial sites where PCBs were used and disposed of. Large quantities of PCBs continue to be present on these sites. Participants also decided to work together to conduct a second PCB Health Congress, the first of which was conducted in 2006 in Fairfield Connecticut the location of the global headquarters of the General Electric Corporation.
This conference gave voice to a common belief that corporations and failed government have polluted the Earth with dangerous chemical substances and that the time has come for accountability for the poisoning of many people who have been exposed to these chemicals. We are among the people who continue to move forward with their efforts to have good health and an uncontaminated environment. We are some of those who believe that corporations and government must be brought under the control of the people.

Interview with documentary filmaker Hala Gabriel

Today's show features filmmaker, freelance producer, production supervisor , and production accountant Hala Gabriel. Hala attended the California Institute of the Arts, where she majored in Film and Television Production. Hala is currently completing her documentary, "Road to Tantura" that delves into her family's past and the destruction of their ancestral village, Tantura, in 1948. By telling the story of one woman's journey into her family's past, the documentary offers a microcosm of the collective Palestinian experience that has been kept buried along with those who perished in Tantura that fateful day in 1948.
Tantura was a small Palestinian v illage on the Mediterranean coast 24 km south of Haifa. It had a population of 1500 people, mostly children. On May 23, the Alexandroni brigade commanded by colonel Benz Pridan an American born in Norfolk, Virginia attacked the village. With little resistance from the villagers, the attack lasted less than 3 hours. After the village was captured, many of the villagers were lined up against a wall and executed. Over 200 villagers were killed. The remaining males, were then taken to Israeli prison camps. The Red Cross took the surviving women and children to refugee camps in neighboring countries. Most of the Tantura villagers ended up in the Yarmouk Refugee Camp outside of Damascus, Syria, which is close to where Hala was born. Today, Tantura is a beautiful beach visited by Israelis from Tel Aviv, and Haifa, who chose to ignore it's painful history. On today's show, we will bring the truth to light, and give voice to the terrible tragedy that occurred on that fateful day in 1948.
