From Vine To Cork: Sustainable Wine-Making Practices

You are planning a nice dinner party and you want to buy a bottle of wine. How do you stay true to your environmental commitment when choosing a wine? Do you need to buy organic wine, or are there other factors that are more significant? And what about the cork? Does it matter what stops the bottle up? Today on Sea Change Radio we explore wine â what goes in the bottle and what seals it. First, we hear from winemaker Christopher Vandendriessche who discusses practices in the industry that do and do not promote sustainability, and how his small family-run winery, White Rock Vineyards, works to conserve natural resources while producing excellent-tasting wine. Next, host Alex Wise speaks to environmental journalist and educator Andrew Revkin, who has been leading a documentary filmmaking project on the sustainability of cork. They talk about cork and the movement toward synthetic corks and aluminum screw-tops.
Dr David McNally, Economics and Politics of Crisis and Resistance

David McNally teaches political science at York University Toronto and actively supports numerous social justice movements in that city.
David is the author of six books: Political Economy and the Rise of Capitalism (1988); Against the Market: Political Economy Market Socialism and the Marxist Critique (1993); Bodies of Meaning: Studies on Language, Labor and Liberation (2001); Another World is Possible: Globalization and Anti-Capitalism (2002; second revised edition 2006); Global Slump: The Economics and Politics of Crisis and Resistance (2010) and Monsters of the Market: Zombies, Vampires and Global Capitalism (2011).
David's research interests include the theory and practice of democracy, Marxism and anti-racism, socialist-feminism, classical and Marxian political economy, Hegel and dialectical social theory, and the history of anti-capitalist movements.
We Speak to Dr. Mc Nally about his most recent book "Global Slump: The Economics and Politics of Crisis and Resistance" (2011). The interview covers the true cost of austerity measures (the transfer of public wealth) and the growing global resistance to this theft.

25 000 migrant workers are brought into Canada every year under the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program (SAWP), a federal program established in 1966. 66% of these workers are in Ontario, 13% in Quebec and 13% in British Columbia.
In the Niagara region, there are about 6000 migrant workers originating from Jamaica and Mexico. We spoke with Jackie Barrett-Greene who is the Newcomer Support Coordinator at AIDS Niagara and has been working with migrant workers in the Niagara region. We spoke about the barriers that migrant workers face, including access to health care services, transportation, language barriers, long work hours and work place safety.

Shutting down Canada's asbestos industry for good

The two remaining asbestos mines in Quebec have been shut down since last fall. A Canadian investor is trying to raise $25 million to re-open it. Meanwhile activists are working equally hard to keep the mine closed - and to finally put an end to Canada's export of this deadly mineral.
