Justice, Justice, You Shall Pursue

March 18, 2012, 7:50 p.m.
Tzedek, tzedek tirdof! Tune in to radio613′s 59th episode featuring a great conversation with Ezra Berkley Nepon about the 1980s progressive Jewish group/movement, New Jewish Agenda. New Jewish Agenda was an American, national, multi-issue, grassroots progressive Jewish organization that operated as a “a Jewish voice among progressives and a progressive voice among Jews.” It was so much fun to talk to Ezra and hear about what led her to do this research, how the NJA functioned, how they struggled, what kinds of issues they tackled. Be inspired and grounded in progressive Jewish history and learn NJA’s story of feminist solidarity, economic justice, feminist, solidarity, nuclear disarmament, AIDS activism and more.

M17 Brutal Cops at Occupy's Six Month Anniversary

March 18, 2012, 7:26 p.m.
March 17 or M17 as the twitter hash reads, marks the six month anniversary of Occupy Wall Street. In a fitting tribute to this occasion, about 600 protestors attempted to reclaim Liberty Square or Zuccotti park last night. They were brutally beaten back by the New York City Police Department. Not only were the activists brutally beaten, but many journalists were also beaten. Following is a narrative of a police force out of control, put together by bloggers David Herod Gershon and Ben Doernberg:

BSTF 905 - The Firesign Theatre

March 18, 2012, 9:43 a.m.
Tonight's BSTF is a full-body immersion in the seminal works of the Firesign Theatre, with a tribute to Peter Bergman. I chose not to play obscurities-- Stang will be taking care of that on his own tribute show--rather, my focus tonight is on those seminal albums that launched me on the path of Firesign worship all those decades ago. My choices of material are the first and last cuts on the non-Nick Danger side of HOW CAN YOU BE IN TWO PLACES AT ONCE ("Antelope Freeway" and "We're Bringing the War Back Home"), with I THINK WE'RE ALL BOZOS ON THIS BUS sandwiched in the middle. My copy of BOZOS was so crackly I've spent the past two nights taking out the pops for five and six hours at a time--but it's worth it to guarantee the fidelity of these masterpieces. Once you hear them begin to unreel, those who soaked in this back then will feel their earworms stir from their too-long coiled slumber--and those who are hearing this for the first time--? You lucky, lucky sumbitches, you. Truly.

Hundreds Rally Against Prison Industrial Complex And Mass Incarceration at the Lincoln Correctional Facility in West Harlem

March 17, 2012, 6:46 p.m.
Hundreds Rally Against Prison Industrial Complex And Mass Incarceration at the Lincoln Correctional Facility in West Harlem - THE NEW JIM CROW! The Occupy Wall Street Prisoner Solidarity Subcommittee along with hundreds of allies heeded Occupy Oakland's call to action and marched in solidarity with Pelican Bay prisoner's hunger strike protest, with brothers and sisters who are dispossessed by the criminal INJUSTICE system, with immigrant detainees and with political prisoners everywhere. They raised their voices against the growth of the privatization of the prison system and mass incarceration - the New Jim Crow. The characterization of the system of mass incarceration as the New Jim Crow raises the racist nature of the prison system, pointing out that between 1970 and 1995, the jailing of African Americans increased seven fold. African Americans make up 12% of the U.S. population - and 53% of the nation's prison population. There are more African Americans enslaved under correctional control today - in prison or jail; on probation or parole - than there were in 1850.
